Also known as the DFDR (digital flight data recorder) and the black box. However, there are actually two "black boxes," both of which are orange!

The DFDR records flight characteristics -- altitude, attitude, position of controls, etc. There's also the cockpit voice recorder, CVR, which records conversation and sounds in the cockpit.

Black box. Even thought they are orange. They are painted this way so they are easy to spot.
