You find that most modern painters have objects in the foreground which are smaller than those in the background. The colour tones expected to be in the background under the rule of perpective, come of in the fore. Tall buildings appear like boxes on the canvas, without linear pespective.

Because they can. Artist of years ago spent so much time trying to perfect their art to look like the real object, but now we have photographs that can do that, and artists no longer need to recreate exact likenesses. And it seems that a lot of people's definition of art is that it needs to push the envelope and be different, or else it's just a still life of fruit in a bowl.

tucksie is a complete amateur/****

art isnt about realism anymore, sure some artist may try to relate to realism within paint; if we stereotype for a moment and say art is paint on canvas... but why try to make the real atmosphere of the space and the image when u can make the image speak for itself and let the artist talk to you about how they see and feel the space and the environment around them.

anyone who says modern art is trash, like an unamde bed is completly missing the point; its easy to claim an idea after its been done, and say: i could do that... but you couldnt, becuase you hadnt, you couldnt explain why and what the piece explores, why the user is attracted to its narrative, its emotions, its story. the more a look at a lot of good contemporary artists the more i look back at 'the masters' and think: its real, we can take a photo for sure, they can draw 'realisitically really well', but art today can take moods and atmospheres which you cant take with photos, you cant describe in words or language. it speaks to you much more liberally, and reflects the culture and time we live in now; so its tottally relevant to everything around us.

defy the rules of perspective: a) cos you can, b) why do you need rules to make art?

architects are better at using perspective, just look at the holland pavillion at this years venice bienelle

1. Not all of them do
2. Rules are meant to be broken
3. Modern painters are perhaps no longer interested in doing things the same way they've been done for thousands of years. They want to paint in such a way as to bring a fresh perspective. Many of us who actually look at modern art are more interested in painters who break fresh ground and raise new artistic issues than those who rely on traditional methods just because they're traditional.

There are NO rules in painting...only techniques, approaches, styles, color theory, color mixing, lots of "isms"...and so on. The fun of painting is that we can create our own realities, with our own laws (within the context of the painting). If there were prescribed formulae for painting, we would not have art, only reproduction sand derivitatives of the same thing, over and over again.

perspective applies perception and perception is individual - its not a photo recording

so you and I can look at the same life scence - we will see the same things but our brains will focus in on different key points

- you see a tree I see a branch

perspective bending simply tries to capture that sense of individual perception onto canvas

All modern artists and painters are a joke, who the hell would want to pay thousands for an unmade bed. I have one in my house every day and it's up for sale.

Any takers??

perhaps they're trying to indicate that what people consider the "absolute reality" is truly only relative and subjective. and, thus, other perspectives and possibilities exist regarding what the "truth" of this or any other matter is. ;-)

If all painters create art that looked realistic then we would call them photographers.
