It depends,
If this is the only life you had, you might want to make the best of it.
Getting killed early or spending the rest of your life in prison would be a waste of what little time you have

No those kind of people are in your local state penitentiary. Even if you don't believe in an afterlife that's no excuse for you to do everything. If there was even a 1% chance that there is an afterlife why not follows the rules while your here because when you die and find out that there is a afterlife and didn't follow the "rules" then you will spend an eternity in Hell. And my friend that is a very long time.

It doesn't matter what you believe, but you want to be able to lay your head down at night with some sort of self-worth. I'm satisfied in knowing that I was the best person I could be to everyone today and if I helped someone, great, if not, I definitely don't want to hurt anyone or break the rules just cause I can. It doesn't seem right.

no matter what your Religious Belief System is there are still the laws rules and mores of the culture and society in which you belong which you must follow or face punishment for violating them. there is also the requirement of treating others rights to free will to follow their own path even if different from yours as they need to respect your free will rights in return.

But it DOES matter. It matters for the here and now. You don't have to have anything after this life for right now to matter.
Why wouldn't you think it matters?

because even if there is no afterlife, why would you want to die young? why would u want to make other peoples life hell? what enjoyment would you get from that? wouldnt u want to just live and be happy while you are alive?
if u went crazy and did everything ud only have a few days of that till your caught and put in jail. and then youd spend the rest of your days in jail until you died and became nothing. what person would want that.
it moreso the opposite. if you knew theres a life after this, why not live it up here while you can, then repent so that you get wher eu wanna go in the after life? it wouldnt matter to live in jail a few years if your going to heaven in the end

Interesting that some folks who erroneously ridicule people for abiding by God's law so as to be spared eternal separation from him also seem to think that the fear of prison is a reasonable explanation for why they behave well.
So, we're doing good in and to society because we fear society's justice? But God's justice is unacceptable?
Hey, if that's enough for you, so be it.

They live life for now. Make the most of now, don't worry about after death. Personally, I like believing that my soul will live on.

Because I live in a society. If I wish to deal with other people who make my life easier, I have to do the same with them.
