Yes they do ....Not all though. If your on a Aircraft Carrier . With the High pitch of sounds coming from the Jet's engines . If you didn't wear them you would be deft. There are many jobs in the service that require you to use ear protection. Some require ear plugs others require Ear head sets. Like the rifle ranges use. Next time you see a News real at a Base that has an Airport or Landing strip... Look and see how are wearing them . At 1st Mar Div San Diego you'll see the Amtracs and Tanks running around . They all have com gear on (Radio Head Sets ) These too will also act as a ear plugs. If you are a grunt ( Ground Pounder "soldiers on foot" ) you wont see many wearing them . They need to keep there ears open for ground movement around them... Hope this has helped ....

It really depends on the type of work being done in the 'comabt zone' as you call it.
On aircraft carriers and on military runways and landing areas, most soldiers are required only by their commanders to wear earplugs as part of their daily duties dealing with loud engines, propellers, and other machinery.
I would have to say that most of the time, whether its in combat, or not, the commander sets the uniform.
In my experience, I've only used earplugs in training for various challenges and events. When I was finished with basic and advanced training, I never even wore earplugs during firing ranges. Not even for the machine gun. I never wore them in Iraq either.
I can only assume that some commanders probably order and issue earplugs to certain companies, squadrons, or even by platoon. Though. I would assume artillary troops should wear earplugs while launching their missions; I could also see how that may affect voice and radio communication with their unit leadership, and or subordinates.

lol soldiers wear earplugs in training, that's about it. Not only would'nt they hear instructions, but they'd not hear enemy forces, warnings, or a myriad of other things. Alot depends on how voracious the firefights are, but many (myself included) suffer permanently damaged hearing as a result of service to Uncle Sam.

soldiers only wear ear plugs during training excercises but not in actual combat, that would be crazy, they wouldnt be able to hear enemies or their superiors, or their radios, or anything. the army is really big on safety though, so during training soldiers take every measure to protect their health, including their hearing.

You would wear them if your going into combat. You will be able to listen to your FTL by pulling out an ear plug. Your FTL can use hand signals to give orders.
