We were there 2 weeks ago for the firtst time and we went by subway, we did not rent a car. Parking seems to be very scarce and expensive in New York, and you have to watch out for all of the other drivers, it seems they would run you off the road if they had a chance. It is so fast paced. Enjoy your trip, and if you have time do the free one hour tour of ground zero given by some of the survivors. We did and got 3 survivors on our tour, one was a retired firefighter, Mickey Cross, that was one of the survivors from stairway b that helped rescue Josephine Harris. It was very heart wrenching and emotional to hear their stories. I highly recommend it.

Avoid driving in NYC whenever possible. It's congested and annoying, sometimes nervewracking. It will detract from the quality of your visit. Your only option would be a parking garage. Those are very expensive in Manhattan. I can recall paying $14 an hour when I occasionally had to drive in. And that was years ago.
Subways and taxis are convenient. Taxis are a lot less expensive than parking.

It's really hard to find parking in NYC - and even if you can find parking, it's incredibly expensive. 2 hours will cost at least $20 in Manhattan. In addition, traffic near Ground Zero is insane - not only street traffic but also pedestrian traffic. There are a lot of police cars that block off traffic in that area, plus lots of construction going on. Park near your hotel and then take the subway down if you really want to see it.

The best advice I an give is DO NOT DRIVE into Manhattan on a weekday !
If you are comming from The New Jersey side, Park in Jersey near a PATH station.
http://www.panynj.gov/CommutingTravel/path/pdfs/NEW_ParkingGuide.pdf
Take the PATH to the World Trade Center stop (Yes, its still named that) $1.50 per person.
The PATH train tracks are layed directly on the bedrock of 'Ground Zero', thats the closest a tourist can come to being on the ground of the site.
Try this self-guided walking tour...

While parking can be expensive, igonre all the rediculous commnet about the way people drive, and police cars blocking things off. Yes, its not like driving in the mall, but peopel do it every day.
If you are visiting several places in Manhattan, stash your car and take the subways and buses.
HAVE FUN

There is usually no problem with parking Downtown on the weekend. There should be plenty of street parking available (bring plenty of quarters).
