Oh....I'm so glad you asked this question. I thought my cat was the only one in the world to do that....& from the answers you're getting, I'm relieved to find out different.
I always thought that it might be because I'm usually very busy & moving around the house. (though often the cat follows & ends up under-foot, he'll eventually go take a nap somewhere) So, to me it seemed to make sense that he'd think that I was sitting down & it was time to play or be petted, like he does when I finally land on the sofa.

I have 3 cats and my Maine Coon is the worse with the bathroom watching thing. I think it's because that's when a cat knows you're not paying attention to anything (cept the bathroom) so he/she can demand more of your attention. Just my opinion.

My male also does this. My brother thinks it has something to do with certain cats seeing the bathroom as the "watering hole". This is true for my cat since he'd rather drink out of the bathtub, sink, and toilet than out of his own water dish. He HATES it when people shut him out of the bathroom, too. He'll stick his paw under and pull on the door over and over again....so it's going "bang, bang, bang" until you let him in, lol.

My kittens Rosaleigh and Mr. Poppins do the exact same thing, you'll be trying to do your business and theres a cat on the tub and one of the floor staring at you. When you shut the door when you go in than you have 2 cats meowing, scratching and sticking their paws underneath the door.

My big, fat Booters cat does that to me every morning, I alway thought it was strange, but it must not be, seems like a lot of you have cats in the bathroom with you.

They are curious about the piddle of the water.
My cat likes to sit on the toilet while I get ready for work in the morning. That is, until she hears my electric shaver, haha!

Yes, mine does it too! I think they want to know what that tinkling noise is - and I understand that many cats can be potty trained, but I will just stick to the traditional litterbox for him!

My dog does this too... of course he follows us wherever we go in the house, he gets kinda pissy if you shut him out of the bathroom though :)
