I think it is because many of them...like chihuahuas and poms were breed for companion dogs....they are very affecinate and loving....they get attached to one person though....and that person is thiers and they are mean to everyone the see as a threat to that....I guess the best way to put it is the get posessive of that person....that is what I think anyway.

I agree with some of the answers about why some small dogs are yappy and nippy. But it is a generalization as it does depend on the owner and how the dog is raised and how well socialized.

I have a miniature poodle that can be a little yappy but he is the mostly gentle dog I've ever had. He is not at all aggressive and has never, ever tried to bite anyone. He is great with children and other dogs. I have made sure he is socialized and knows how to behave. It's worth the effort as he is welcome everywhere and all the neighbours have to say hello when we go for walks.

Hi! Jesse was on the right track. Small dogs for the most part due feel vulnerable and what you are seeing is "fear aggression". They know they can get hurt so they try to lash out first, a sort of strike first mentality hoping to scare off possible predators. Another problem is that alot of owners simply don't understand the dynamics of a dog's world and they don't do what is needed to make the dog feel safe. A good resource for this is Becoming a Pack Leader - DVD (NTSC format for US & Canada)
Item #: 0101NT-BPL from Cesar Milan.

Also, you can catch his program Mon - Friday on National Geographic. I've never seen anyone tap into the this problem better than him! You and your dog (or your friend's dogs) will be much happier!
Hope this helps!

Of course, basic temperament is involved...but I feel mostly because the OWNERS let them get away with it. They don't want to "hurt the dog's feelings" and spoil them terribly. Many small dog owners do not realize a small dog is still a dog. They think a small dog will be "easier".....not neccessarily true!

A little dog bites just as big dog. It should NEVER be allowed. A mean dog is a liability.

I particularly have a terrier mutt and he wasn't complicated to coach in any respect. have been given him at 6 weeks previous and basically had some blunders for a pair weeks until now being completely potty-experienced. No injuries in any respect after that preliminary practise era. i've got talked to different dogs vendors and breeders and that i replaced into stunned that it wasn't uncommon with terriers. the only ingredient is that the dogs desires to be walked and performed with ALOT.

Its called the Paris Hilton syndrome.
With Paris all over the TV, newspapers, magazines, all dogs are sure to see her and her little dog sooner or later.
They feel for that poor creature, and tend to hate people from that moment onwards... :'-(
We must show love and understanding, so that they realise that not all humans are like that monster...

Because the owners spoil them to the point they are brats and their mind is all messed up from it. Lap dogs are companion dogs so people don't realize they are still a dog and need boundaries and limits. They are like spoiled brat children.

I only know about Lhasa Apso's. They're ferocious and yappy because they were bred to be palace guard dogs.

Many larger breeds were bred for hunting or shepherding where being ferocious isn't a good trait.

They're not mean, it's just their bark that make them sound mean. I have a big 90 pound german shepherd and he sounds like a dork when he barks!
