If you're slow at startup, it's probably because there are too many programs starting up at that time.
A lot of extraneous software plants itself in the startup utility so that it can run in the background when you're not using it (allows for auto updates and such).
Here is what you do:
Click the start menu.
Look on the right, and you'll see "RUN".
Open the Run Dialog and type "msconfig".
When the system configuration utility appears on your screen, choose the last tab to the right, "Startup".
Look through this list of programs. The only ones that should be starting up are programs related to your printer and monitor/mouse (laptops, usually). Any viewers, like quicktime, realplayer, etc. and anything related to Adobe or messenger services can be unchecked.
When you're done unchecking things, click apply and exit out of that window. It will ask you to restart, do so now.
When things come back up, it will be faster, but there will be a strange box telling you that your system has been changed. No problem, just click ok and go on your happy way.
Good luck :)

1. You either have Windows XP or you have Windows 2000, you can't have both unless you've got them on seprate particians on your hard drive.
2. If you're having a difficult time booting up windows, you might want to do a disk cleanup and a disk defragment. It may take a while if you've never "Defraged" your system before, so be prepared to have your computer stay on all night... of for a few nights depending on the amount of space you've occupied on your hard drive.

Add more memory, disable auto load programs
Check that there are no processes running that can be done once daily like a backup, indexing
Get rid of intensive programs like loading graphics.
Programs like AOL IM are really bad memory HOGS
Do a disk defrag, make sure there is plenty of space on the hard drive to run and have extra work space, delete cookies and Temp folders

You could do good to take the recommendation of our expensive contributor, Enigma, who has taken the time to give super knowledge. Well performed expensive lady! Now, I must consider you would additionally recall portray your computer purple, however, if a lot of these pleasant recommendations turn out fruitless then, no offence my well guy, however I'll guess your laptop could also be a heap of cr@p and your first-class direction of movement is to improve it.
