She is 2 and a half years old. She knows what the toilet is and what goes in it. What are the signs of being ready to potty train? Lately she has been ripping off clean diapers and throwing them on the ground. Is that a sign she is ready?

She has her own little potty and went in it once. Also she tells use when her diaper is wet.

First, I seriously have to question if many of the people answering here have every actually potty trained a child. Age doesn't have as much to do with it as the ability to control bodily functions. Some develop control at a very young age and some are much older. Everybody is different.

It sounds like she might be ready, but this is really a choice her parents need to make since they are the ones who will need to do the majority of the work. Once the decision is made to potty train, you have to commit to it 100% or the child will get confused. When I potty trained my 3 kids we made a really big deal about it. We took them to the store and let them pick out their "big girl panties" and got them the ones with Cinderella or Barbie or Dora on them. Whatever they wanted. Then we came home and had a diaper disposal ceremony where we collected all of the diapers in the house and got rid of them all. My kids actually said goodbye to diapers and we made a really big deal about them all going away and never coming back. Then we put on the "big girl panties" and never looked back. It does get a little messy at first, but they catch on pretty quickly.

I don't recommend giving a child treats of food or candy (or anything edible) for going potty. One, that can start a vicious cycle of food rewards that can leave a girl overweight and with bad eating habits; and two, I don't really like to associate food with going potty, ever. That is just gross.

Best of luck.

I would think that these are all good signs that she may be ready to try. My 26 month old knows about the potty and talks about it and only went in her little potty once too. I keep telling her to let me know if she has to pee or poop and she does not understand that yet I guess. Once in a while she will tell me pee pee on the potty so we put her on it and she sits there for a minuite and says all done without doing anything. Hopefully she will go for real soon. I have been told by others that once they go, they want to go in the potty all the time. Good luck.

My sister was ripping off clean diapers, and grabbing new ones and moving her butt around to get perfect on the diaper and put her own diaper on at 9 months...She was potty trained by like 11 months..

It sounds like she might be ready to start, but if she protests, don't push her. Can she remove her clothes by herself? That's a big help. Also, you can try putting her in pull-ups, they are harder to rip off than diapers, but still allow her the freedom to go to the potty by herself. Huggies and Pampers both have information on their websites about how to make potty training easier for the parent and the child.

Oh yeah, she's definitely ready. But just to make sure she likes or continues to go to the potty. When she goes, give her praise and a treat. Then when she gets a little older and is in the habit of going to the potty, ween her off of the treats. Good luck.

shouldn't this be something the parents are doing??? But it does sound like it's about time. I started putting my son in real underpants so that he could be proud to be potty trained, instead of wasting money on diapers to just throw them away. If the underpants get dirty, all you have to do is wash them. Using the underpants makes children feel like they are grown up, because that's how mommy and daddy do it.

I'd say it's time to start....just move slowly. You may want to consider getting a special potty or potty seat and letting her play with it. This way she'll get used to it and see it as something fun to try. There are some great books about potty training geared towards kids....you may want to check your library or the internet for some ideas.

Sounds like she is almost ready, but I'd wait a few more weeks. Start talking about it and everytime you change her diaper ask her if she is going to use the potty soon.

YES! YES! YES! I believe girls can be trained as soon as they are walking. Boys tend to be a little slower. She understands and she is physically capable of doing it. I do no t buy all of the psycobabble about training too early. If she is eating adult food, she is passing adult excrement. I do not mind changing diapers, but after a certain age, it's each girl for herself. Good luck. Get her used to the idea of being able to wear "big girl panties "(not size 10-13 plus sizes LOL).
