Black tongue refers to a number of conditions of humans and animals that cause the tongue to go dark.
Black hairy tongue in humans is a harmless condition caused by a fungus which grows on the top surface of the tongue. It is associated with the elderly, as well as with antibiotic use. It is more commonly seen in smokers. The tongue and teeth can also turn black after the use of Pepto Bismol tablets, but this is because of the reaction between the intestinal secretions and the bismuth found in the drug rather than the fungus which causes BHT.

I see two possibilities here. One: Sometimes when your appendix is about to burst you will develop a second, protective like sack around your appendix. The result will either be a ruptured appendix, or the object blocking it will loosen and you will be fine, but one of the symptoms is a black tongue and mouth. And number two: maybe you subconsciously like to chew on pens.

this is only speculation, based on something that happened to me, just once.
my wife (we were single then) and i engaged in a rough session of french kissing it didn't hurt or anything. the following morninhg my lips and tongue were bruised (black and blue). there still wasn't any pain. it lasted for about 2 days and it's never returned.
that's the only thing i can think of that might cause the discolored mouth and tongue.

It could be a couple of things...you could have taken some Pepto Bismol a day or so before, that will sometimes cause it, or if you were on antibiotics that could have done it too. I think some antacids can do it too. Usually nothing to worry about...

Pepto-bismol does this to your mouth. It's completely harmless but a strange (and startling!) side effect. No need to call the doc because it does go away.

What did you eat just before bedtime?
If you took Pepto Bismol just before sleep and didn't brush, it'll do that.

You probably sucked on your pen and didn't know you had ink in your mouth.
