I'm a 23-year old woman living in North Carolina. I'm getting my license for the first time and desperately need *affordable* car insurance. Problems? I am an orphan, so I can't be added to my parents' policy. I don't live alone, but cannot be added to my roommate's policy. Most insurance companies have told me that b/c I don't live alone, I can't get a nonowner's policy, which is fine, but the prospect of paying $5,000 for a 6-month policy is unimaginable. Does anyone know where I can start? I will get my restricted license (restricted due to NC's financial liability requirement) next week and need to get insurance and a car ASAP. HELP!

I work in the insurance biz - and I can tell you that what you are saying is BS. Whoever told you this is trying to take advantage of you and take you for all your worth.
You need to call a reputable insurance company. A big one like State Farm. ALso, when you get your car, get one that is not expensive to insure, like a honda or toyota - and make sure it's at least 5 years old. The rates will be lower for that.
Then ask the ins. agt what kind of discounts you qualify for. Did you just graduate from college with a 3.0 or better GPA? Are you still in school? Do you only drive short distances? How about a multi line policy - if you get a renters policy, you might me able to qualify foe enough discount on the car for the renters policy to pay for it;s self.
You need to be smarter and more proactive! We've all been there! Good luck

$5000 is VERY high for a 6-month policy -- for any policy! Are you sure this isn't some kind of deposit or one-time fee?
Do you rent an apartment? Can you get (or do you have) a renter's policy? You may want to look into it. If you have both car insurance and a renters policy with the same company, you may qualify for a discount. It won't be much, but it will be something. Get a used car and only carry liability insurance with a high deductible. I'm not sure I would go with just the minimum liability; as a new driver, you may want just a little more protection.

5000 for 6 months does not seem right. My son was 17 in NY and paying 4800 for a year as a new driver. When I bought him his car, little did I know the insurance would cost more then the car.
I would call around. Pay cash for an old clunker and not get collision and get a high deductible.

Find an independent agent who isn't tied to a particular company and ask his opinion on what policy is best for you. Since you have no record, it will be high at first.

Yea! Buy a clunker put 25/50/25 liability. No collision/comprehensive...... There will be no ded.. $5,000 sounds way to high. It should be more like $2,500. for a year.....
If you have a good driving record????....Get into one accident or a speeding ticket YOU WILL be paying $5,000...

unfortunatley you will have to pay those high premiums until your at least 25. At that time rates will drop, I dont know how much. Best bet get an older car, get minimum insurance and hope to god nothing happens.
