In April I flew to Venezuela via Frankfurt using Lufthansa. This was the first time I had used that airline and I was surprised at the quality of the service - good food with alcoholic drinks (if you wanted it, and I did!); attentive, trilingual cabin staff; and flights departed and arrived on time. My previous long-haul flights (also between UK and Venezuela) were either with British Airways or the now defunct Venezuelan airline Viasa. Both were also excellent in my opinion. A Venezuelan friend of mine visited me recently and used TAP, the Portuguese airline. She said the service was poor, but then it has been a long-standing joke that TAP stands for "Take Another Plane".

Personally speaking I would say British Airways, however everyone has differing views of what makes an Airline good.
For example, I can't stand Virgin Atlantic (or indeed anything to do with the Virgin brand in general) as I think it's a bit tacky and unless you are a "hip" 30something they don't really want to know. However there are others who will think Virgin is great so it all comes down to choice.
Air France is another airline with a very good reputation, their food (being a French airline of course) is highly rated.

Of the 60+ airlines I have travelled with, I'd say Singapore or Virgin.
BA is way over-rated.

Midwest Airlines. Even though they are primarily fly in the US, for comfort there is no comparision. Only 4 across seating on all their planes. No more cramming 3 people on one side of the aisle.

The Far East Have great airlines. Cathay Pacific is nice, and so is Singapore, Virgin is nice, but expensive, and BA is also good (British Airways)
