Drug abuse is, put concisely, when a person slips beyond normal, typical drug use. In many circles, using any illicit drug even once is considered abuse, because there the drug serves no official medical purpose, and therefore constitutes abuse.

However, in most cases, a 'user' differs from an 'abuser' in that those who abuse drugs are taking them well above moderate doses and frequency.

Any drug can be abused. Common aspirin or other OTC analgesics can be abused when the user consumes them on a frequent basis above recommended dosages. Widely believed to have a direct link to "addiction", drug abuse is no the same thing. Drug Abuse is a symptom of addiction to a substance. People who abuse drugs often do so as a result of becoming addicted to the substance.

In essence, a person who has lost control over the drug he/she is taking will begin abusing the drug. Alcohol and Caffeine are the two most commonly abused drugs. Many legal prescription medications are abused as well, but in typical forums, the words "drug abuse" will spark thoughts of heroin junkies and crack addicts. These examples are the more striking, if not disturbing images of drug abuse, but do indeed fit the bill.
