Well the whole saying is
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes But Gentlemen Marry Brunettes
It's from two books by Anita Loos.
I think the saying is suggesting that when a man is younger and more visual a blonde may be more noticeable and get his attention for fun. But as he gets older, more mature and wants something a bit deeper he is looking past things like hair colour.
I haven't read the books but I did see the film 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes'... It's been a while but if I remember correctly it was the Brunette who ended up with the decent guy.
Ultimately any guy worth being with isn't gonna be with you for your hair colour.
Like you said I think it has more influence on how women treat you. I think women can be very insecure and believe what the magazines tell us on a subconscious level. You have to be skinny but with a large bust and a round pert butt, blue eyes and blonde hair to be considered attractive. And when a lot of women see these characteristics in another women (all or some) there is a sorta competitive instinct that kicks in and the bit**y element comes out. Women... we can really be our own worst enemies!
Men like everything... most men are just so grateful you even talk to them these days that they don't even notice your hair colour.

No, some men are simply attracted to women who are very approachable (or, in some cases, very easy), which is often exactly what a woman is signaling when she changes her hair color to blond. After all, the cultural stereotype of a fake blond is exactly that (dumb and very sexually active), so that must ultimately be what the new blond is after. This should also explain the dirty looks from other women.
By the way, men are rarely fools in this regard. Contrary to what some fake blonds think, most men can often spot a real blond from a fake a mile away - the notion that they're fooling anyone is probably where the "dumb blond" stereotype started. Men rarely treat a real blond in the same manner as they would a fake.

I personally prefer brunettes over blondes to look at but it seems that 75% of the woman I have dated were blonde. On the other hand in my teenaged years I spent about 5 years bleach blonde and I got way more action from the oposite sex. so perhaps woman prefer blondes guys?

I prefer brunettes, but that is just me, I have buddies who will only go for blondes, others that will stick with mainly brunettes. It depends on the guy I guess. In terms of people treating you different as a brunette, maybe you just are naturally fit to have dark hair.

To the natural eye, and due to the contrast in color, a blonde sticks out in a crowd, and naturally will get more eye contact. But I prefer brunettes over blondes as far as looks go.

Since the days of Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield, blondes have been sterotyped as the sexy, bombshell sex kitten with big boobs and no brain. In Hollywood they have been depicted and flashy and most desirable. However, many many men prefer brunettes. Brunettes seem more intelligent and approachable.

Brunettes are seen as strong, smart, and tend to take charge. The reason most men go for blondes is because they feel that blondes are ditzy, sexual, and in some cases, just a challenge to accomplish to satisfy their fantasies.

Not really. Most men like all sorts of colors (except perhaps for redhead). What men like a lot is the streaks women put into hair now a days. Light brown hair with blonde streaks. I know I like that a lot. I think I am not alone. Blonde, Brunette, we do not care. It is the "styleing of the hair" more than the color that men look at. It is the style, not the color.
Do not know about women treating blonde women bad. I am man. But it wouldn't surprise me, as women get a bet crazy and jealous of other women; MUCH more so than men ever do. Men NEVER get jealous of other men. Men are normal. Women are too emotional sometimes. Especially in regards to how they look.
Men will like most any woman, anyway. Except many do not like fat women.
Here are some things men LIKE when meeting NEW woman, and you should do if you want this man:
1) ASK ABOUT THEM!!! ....don't just talk about yourself. (This is much more important than you think. If woman never asks me a question about me, like what do I do for a living; ANY question, within first 20 minutes, they say to methey are only interested in themselves and not in the me). Ask anything, but ask! VERY important. Men do not like self-centered women who only talk about themselves.
2) laugh at good jokes, but not necessarily every joke. If man makes fun of you, repeatedly, turn around and leave. They will not change, and you deserve better. Dirty jokes? That depends a lot on you. Do realize, that it will tell a lot about yourself to the man if you laugh, or remain silent to dirty jokes. Man with dirty jokes, knows no other way to joke. Leave him if you do not like it. He will not get any better either.
3) touch them on arm or shoulder, when you talk to them. Not all the time, just once in a while. Men love that.
4) don't talk about old boyfriends, unless they ask.
5) make them feel good about THEMSELVES. (not good about YOU----so many women have this backwards).
6) let man talk TOO.
7) Be honest, men can easily see dishonesty in women. And they usually do not like it.
8) At first meetings, always let man pay. Do not offer to pay. Only poor man would allow that. And they will take advantage of this. You want poor man? Or man with integrity??? Poor men have poor souls. They poor for a reason. Remember that. [Later, after dating awhile, then offer to pay once in a while, like for dinner, drink or movie. Man will TREMENDOUSLY appreciate that. BUT DON'T DO IT EARLY. YOU CANNOT 'BUY' A GOOD MAN. Nor should you try. [I'm sorry, I see so many young women at bars buying drinks for men, it makes me sick. What is women thinking?? Good man will never accept this. Only bad men will accept this. Why you go for bad men. Pick good man, let him pay.
9) So many men act like jerks; that is because women pay more attention to them. That does NOT mean they are good man. Just means they are a jerk. And jerks will ALWAYS be jerks. Do not forget about man who sits quietly; he may be best man you ever met. But maybe you need to say something first. Try it. You might find out he not so quiet after all. He's just shy, and doesn't know how to meet woman.
Hair color is of little importance to men. Much more important is what I say above.
Good luck!

well, I think fake blond sends the message, I want to be more attractive to men, Many men like women even showing that small effort toward attracting them, I don't. I prefer natural hair color, whatever it is, sends the clear message, I am who I am, if you don't like it, I have just filtered you out.

i actually got more attention being brunette....i think so many girls are blonde, no one really takes the time to look at their faces...guys think "oh bleached out hair, she's hot"...but they dont automatically think that about a brunette..so when a gorgeous brunette comes along, she stands out.
when i was blonde, i didnt feel like myself at all..yeah maybe you get more glances at first but thats all, doesn't really matter...what matters is you over all.i think its sad that men find girls hot just b/c they have white hair...esp when it looks fake and is so commmon.i hate when girls bleach their hair just cus they think it looks better to boys. if its natural though, thats rare and just as cute as brunettes.
