I have had a ongoing problem with my chi since I got her at 8 wks old. She barks and growls at every person she sees. When people come over to our house, she will growl and bark and will not go to them and let them hold or pet her. She will also do this to ppl she sees daily. Its very embarassing. We are staying at a hotel and the whole staff knows her as the dog that you cant pet. She is very beautiful and ppl naturally want to pet her. I am at the end of my rope. My father in law will be staying with us for a month and I know she will not warm up to him. If someone would try to hold her she acts as if she is being killed, she SCREAMS and thrashes her body around to get away from them. She is good with me and my husband and only ONE of my friends. My friend has a chi also and our dogs play. My friends husband tries to hold her after seeing her THOUSANDS of times and she wont let HIM pet her!!!! Please help. I have thought of class, but she wont listen to trainers

I am sorry what you are going through with your chihuahua...but I am also in the same boat as you. Our little pup is over a year old now she barks and growls at whatever sounds she hears and also people we meet whether on the street or when we have company come over. The thing is if they aren't familiar with that person what they are doing is protecting you and themself from harm. The more you introduce he/she to people..hopefully the more relaxed he/she will feel. They are extremely loyal and unfortunately jealous...they will protect their owner to the exteme.

I also read that short hair chihuahuas are known to be this way than rather a long hair one.

They are such loving, loyal, and affectionate to their owner. I have taught mine to go fetch her toys and she brings it back to me by throwing it at me or down in front of me...its hysterical.

All I know is we love our little Olivia...she brings me so much happiness and laughter....she is part of our family.

Sorry I really didn't solve your problem...but this is their nature!!

Chihuahua's are very protective of their family by nature. She assumes that the other people are there to harm you. She may never out grow this behaviour. My Mom told me that she had a i year old Chi when I was born. The dog would not let anyone near me,including my Dad. Chi are just this way. Even with alot of socialization some dogs never get better. I am an owner of two long-haired Chihuahuas and they love everyone. Be very careful around small children, because she will attack them. Please place her in a crate when children come over. No need for a law suit.Good luck.......

I would recommend getting a cat. It will keep the chihuahua squeeling, and by the time your parents get there, the dog won't have any voice left - for the thrashing, give the dog a half of a percoset - this should glaze it over real good and keep it still. If it starts to lose vital signs, then give it a 1/4 of a viagra.. Short term solution, but effective nonetheless.

My Girlfriend's dog does the same thing - makes you want to smack it. I refuse to hit an animal, but I will put the cat on it and let it fend for itself.

Your dog simply has NOT been socialized correctly, neither by yourself or the so-called breeder she came from. Small breed dogs often have more dominant-aggressive problems than bigger dogs. This likely boils down to a dominance problem as well as a fear problem. Your dog is placed in a dominant position, but she is also fearful of others. I would recommend you get a trainer that makes house calls, because no class is going to be right for her. It's important that your trainer of choice be experienced with this problem, make sure they're not someone that just read a book or watched a video and they think they're a trainer (so this counts out Petsmart, Petco, Canine Counselors, and most "Big" dog training companies). The best training companies are those that only allow 1 or 2 or POSSIBLY 3 trainers be associated with them. Look for training credentials such as awards won by dogs trained. Most of the time trainers throw smoke and mirrors in your way by saying they have trained this many dogs in this many years. Most trainers that say this believe in quantity rather than quality. Be careful with choosing your trainer, but choose one soon so this problem doesn't escalate into a dog-bite case! Good luck!

Check out the Dog Whisperer show. He's a miracle worker with dogs that are mental. He probably has a website too that you could research. Sounds like the dog just needs to learn how to socialize.

Chihuhuas are both protective and defensive. She's small, everything is bigger than her. She's good with you becasue she loves you. They take forever to warm up to people. My friend has a Chihuhua that barks at everyone. They take a lot more socialization than most dogs. Part of their breed. Be patient and persistant.

Bianca, i can understand your thinking why it seems that everybody hates the breed. it seems that way on condition that this is the breed you very own, and that's the only canines that everybody calls recommend. What you're able to do to stay away from people from calling her names is prepare her to no longer attack people while they're being AFFECTIONATE in the direction of you. there's a distinction between her retaining you, and her attacking those that are friendly and recommend no harm. at an identical time as i comprehend for a certainty that Chihuahua's love the persons they bond with, I additionally comprehend that canines in easy terms do what their "%. chief" enables them to do. in case you teach her that her habit is fantastic then she would be waiting to proceed to show the comparable habit, thinking that it truly is what you like from her. Discouraqge her habit by potential of putting her faraway from you while she does attempt to attack somebody for being close to you, touching you. Being as shielding of you as she is, she could hate to be taken faraway from you for her habit. each and every time that she is placed a sprint way faraway from you (yet another room, off of the settee out of your lap, and so on.) she would be waiting to connect the agressive habit with being faraway from you and she or he would be waiting to understand she would not desire to maintain being faraway from you, so she has to alter what she is doing. i'm hoping this permits Now, to the guy that suggested because of the fact Chihuahua's are yappy, Chi's have been bred as better half canines years in the past, earlier people started wanting them as lovable little "teacup" handbag canines. they think approximately their human to be their %.. For what they're bred for, they do a stunning activity. everybody can not stand the yapping of Chihuahua's and not all of them are yappy, yet they have been in basic terms bred that way. actual Chihuahua enthusiasts love the yappiness approximately them too. Its in basic terms like a kit.
