Interesting. First we have some Bach-bashing, followed by Mozart. It seems that in the eyes of real classical audience the "Trinity" has broken down. Will Beethoven be next?

Overrated: Mozart. Sure, he was a great composer, but he's one of the few names everyone knows. I don't think he's truly representative of the best classical music. Besides, a lot of his music all sounds the same.

Underrated: there are too many to count. Messiaen, Scriabin, Barber, Mahler, Martinu, and Prokofiev, just to name a few.

Mussorsky is seriously underated. He wrote not only my favorite piece 'Night on Bald Mountain' but a fabulous piece 'Pictures of an Exhibition' yet many people do not know his name, and are hardly familiar with any of his stuff outside of Bald Mountain being played in commerials. I think Bach is overated. I am not a fan of Baroque period music and find that many of Bach's pieces sound exactly the same. I play violin and I swear, there is nothing worse then being in a chamber group that only likes to play Bach. I can barely tell one song from another, and don't get me started on his fugues.

Gottschalk is certainly one of the most underratted American composers of all time. The man was a superb pianist and an extremely talented composer far ahead of his time. As far as overrated composers, I would have to say Stravinsky. I love his music, but what he really did best was to hop on the band wagon and write styles of music that were already pioneered by other composers and were guaranteed to be a success.

Hmm. I would have to say that the most overrated is Mozart. Don't get me wrong, I love his stuff, but I think there were several composers that lived in the same time who were just as good or better. I think the most underrated would have to be Grieg. Maybe just 'cause I love is stuff to, and hadn't heard of him before Grade Seven Piano.

The most underrated is Beethoven. The most over rated is Bach. Beethoven moves one, emotionally. Bach. whom I like to call a purveyor of 'Tinkly ' music, puts we to sleep.

I think George Gershwin is underrated.

He worked in multiple genres, from classical and opera to Broadway and pop tunes.

I think George Gershwin is over-rated as a composer. He was basically a second-rate ragtime pianist, arranger and songwriter who dabbled in symphonic music.

Overrated -- James Sweringen -- didn't like any of his tunes and couldn't stand playing them in band.

Underrated -- Sousa -- more marches need to be played!!
