the puppy almost flawlessly does his business on a newspaper placed on the balcony. i'm walking him in hopes that he may change his mind, but he always waits for home and the paper. how do i make the transition from paper to the outdoors?
someone suggested i place papers in the garden, and after establishing that as a primary potty area i move the paper down to a location on the road. is this the best method?
thanks.

watch him closely, when he goes near the paper, or shows signs that its time, take him outside and wait with him until he goes. if he does then give praise and or a treat. if you catch him going on the paper tell him no and immediately bring him out side, even if its in mid-stream. scolding doesn't seem to work as well as praise, but a firm "NO" will get his attention. good luck!

Taking the papers outside will definitely help. Next time, though, I would recommend staying away from paper training altogether, because that dog will forever associate paper on the floor with peeing. Not good!! LOL
If you have a room that the pup is confined to, try placing a cow bell (or similar) on the door knob, or somewhere else accessible to the pup. Show the pup how to *ring* the bell, by bumping into it, or pawing it, and once the pup figures that out, immediately take it outdoors. All of my dogs have been trained this way and it works wonderfully. Even at 5+ years of age, mine know that they only need to ring the bell to go out. No barking, whining, etc...

that's the one downfall with paper training is they train to the paper.. the best bet is to pretty much do as you mentioned. keep moving the paper a bit closer to the designated potty place and eventually start removing it or making the paper smaller until puppy goes all on his own in the spot w/o paper. if you're this far at 3 months you're doing alright..

When you see him heading over to the papers get him outside immediately. After a few days, he will get the idea. Also, for when you are not home, crate training works awesome!

I had to literally take the papers my pup used...the used ones..and sit outside with her when she was 4 months old...and say go pottie, do your business...something for her to know it's where she is to go...it worked, but man I was out there for hours....she finally got it...

oh...and take the papers up in the house..if they are not there, the pup can't go on them...

good luck...

Put the paper where you want him to go take him out and show him and after a couple days of him going on that spot remove the paper and he sould be done!

that's a good idea what your friend says. another thing to do is make sure you take him out the same door every time otherwise he'll get confused. what we also did was hung a rope with bells around the door and every time you take him outside ring the bells and always say the same things when you want him to go we say go poopies and pee pees and when you take him for a walk and he finally goes outside give him a treat trust me they like their treats and will do whatever you want for one. after you have trained him to go out keep the bells on the door and whenever he needs to go out he'll ring the bell. we taught ours to do this and it's sooooo cute. another thing you might want to do is take him to obedience class it's $99.00 for 8 weeks at petsmart and it's well worth the money. good luck

Paper coaching is handiest meant to be a transitority factor til they get all their pictures. You can begin taking them external now and so long as they are now not paper informed, it will have to be less difficult. Positive reinforcement and treats EVERY time they move and instantly in order that they realize they did well. Have u attempted crate coaching? It turns out to paintings good, no less than for me. Good good fortune.

well what has worked best for me is taking them outside very often, maybe every hour, you have to praise them when they go outside & possibly reward them, my dogs have always gotten the message that way but it does take some time, you should go out with them at least once a day anyway, it takes away the stress of the day and the dog loves it.

HI, first, everytime you see him heading for the paper, tell him "Go Pee, DogName." While he's doing it, tell him "Good Pee, Good Dog, Good Pee". with enthusisiam. Then, save a paper or a rag with HIS urine on it. Take it with you when you take him outside. Put it near a tree or post where you want him to go. Have him sniff it (hold near nose if you have to), and give "Go Pee" command. Lot's of praise when he gets it. All my dogs know "Go Pee", and head for the door. Hope this helps.
