I was taught good manners befitting an officer's grandson in the early seventies, yet the only times my good maners are not laughed at are at SCA events and Sci-fi/fantasy conventions. I am a published poet but that too is treated with ridacule and laughter. what is worse, I do not know how to be any other way, when I try to be a "bad boy" it just comes off as being fake.

Because many people are clueless about proper manners, so they scoff at the idea of them to hide their ignorance.
Same with poetry- most people have not been exposed to or taught how to think about poetry, so if it doesn't rhyme, they don't get it. Instead of trying to understand poetry, they ridicule it to once again hide their ignorance.
I mean, how many people can speak intelligently about a tanka or a cinquain or a sonnet?

I am so glad you choose to act like yourself. Perhaps all your superior qualities are laughed at in singles clubs because the people there are, well, not to be rude, but...still single. Ask yourself, what kind of relationship do you want? A long term serious relationship with that one special lady, or just flings? If it's a long term relationship, hanging out at singles clubs isn't the best place to be. Think of the characteristics that is common among women who go there. What kind of woman do you want? If it is someone with more depth who can appreciate someone like yourself, then change your scene. If you are after flings though, a singles club is the place to be and maybe some lady will eventually come your way. (Personally, I find manners befitting an officer's grandson HOT.)

No one goes to a singles club for poetry and manners. It's great that you're a published poet, but face facts: Not many women are into that. And I can't claim to speak for every woman here, but I definitely don't want manners. Too patronizing.

because we are a society surrounded by sex-driven brutes (males and females alike). Sadly, a cultured individual as yourself is viewed as "uptight or too conservative". Avoid places where these idiots only want "bad boys". You'll have a better opportunity picking up a girl at bookstores, museums, high end cafes. Most girls don't appreciate a decent guy. It doesn't register in most women's brains that a "bad boy" is more likely to treat them like dirt. In a singles club, if you're not a sweaty muscle bound brute with tattoos, you're hopeless.

Because at singles clubs, everyone is too drunk ....if you want to meet a nice girl, go somewhere else! I'm a nice girl...I don't go to those places...and I wouldn't laugh at you. But I don't date guys I meet on the internet...I'm trying to find a nice guy at my church or at a coffee shop or at a bookstore or at the library...(there are some crazy guys there too!)

the women that go to singles clubs do not fancy romantics. they are interested in money, physique, and how the guy looks. i would not rely on those places for you.
