I think its a true saying that friends are the family we chose for ourselves. I'm not very close to my family - I guess beng born into a group of people doesn't automatically mean that you will get along and life events can change family relationships. I wouldn't be here if it weren't for friends - I am lucky enough to have the offer of support, love and understanding which I would not get from my family. I know there are a lot of people who enjoy great relationships with their families which is great and I'm not knocking that at all. :)

I think that is because friends are in the same age range and share common thoughts, interests and views in life. But............you can only rely on friends whilst they stay friends. When things get really dire friends will often dessert you but it is family (usually) that sticks with you , supports and helps you to move onwards and upwards not matter how tough the situation may be.

with every family there is a pecking order. however close you may or not be with your mum/dad/son/aunt etc there is always that relationship predominantly.. you are joined thru blood. However with friends, they are there as your equals, you became friends because at some point you shared an experience, or a time or a place.
Altho some family members may become friends, that unique tie that you share with a friend cannot be replicated as a family member also has ties with the rest of your family

I think sometimes it is easier to confide in a friend because they are going to be there for you unbiased. Family tends to take your side on things and sometimes we need to hear another side of what we are concerned about. Sometimes, though, it can be eaiser to rely on family because they love you unconditionally. It all depends on the situation I suppose.

When people do that, it is because friends are people that you more consciously choose to share your life, whereas, more people feel that their family is just who they ended up with. Family is more than blood or birthright, family is who cares for you, who is there for you, who will support you. For many people friends provide all of that more so than blood relatives.

The saying " You can choose your friends but you can't choose your family" comes to mind. I, personally, feel that my friends listen to me more than my family. I also find that I don't want to burden my family with my problems. Hope this helps.

because there are certain things people can't tell their family or of whom don't feel inclined to tell them, in case they overreact or get upset. so its understandble why we would turn to friends for a shoulder to cry on and as a support unit to rely on

because you choose your friends and not your family, and your friends love you and give you advice because they want to, not because they have to, and mostly your friends know you better, i know my friends know me better than my family do, and my friends give me advice that is best for me, not the advice that will hurt me less in the long run
