It is an addiction that they cannot hide- what is your addiction?

It can be genetic, metabolic, emotional (such as depression), or physiological (thyroid, diabetes, etc.). If you are asking this question, you are probably young and/or of the genetic makeup which will never have you get fat, and not because you're some hero who watches everything he eats and exercises like a madman. Unless you are working hard and denying yourself food in order to stay slim, the negative undertone of your question is unwarranted. Maybe one day you'll fall victim to one of the reasons I mentioned above, find yourself really fat, all the while being a busy adult with multiple responsibilities and very little time in your day to meal-plan and exercise. Being fat is not easy to reverse, and there's more to it than people think. HAVE SOME COMPASSION.

I think maybe some people get to a point that they don't feel they can change for the better. Like, it seems to hard to exercise and work out. Maybe they are depressed and continue to "feed" their depression by eating. Emotional eating is very common among people who are overweight.

Maybe because their priorities are different to yours and who can say they are wrong.

Some people are even lucky enough to maintain normal weight while eating whatever they want, but we don't get the opportunity for an upgrade if the body we are issued with does not meet with our expectations.

Some people take their good luck for granted and criticise other people who are not so lucky.

In some rare cases, there is an underlying medical condition, though half of obese people that claim to have it don't. Mostly it's just an obsessive compulsive disorder... Eating raises seretonin, which makes you feel good... So people whom are depressed or stressed can become overeaters...

speaking as someone who is obese, i find that for years i refused to look at myself...all of my mirrors were small so i could only see from the neck up...i would look the other way when passing by a store window so i didn't see my reflection, i refused to have pictures taking of me...this allowed me to "trick" myself in thinking that i wasn't that heavy..in my mind i could creat what i looked like...also, it seemed i turned to food as comfort. it was always there for me, it never argued with me, it understood how i felt and could make things better somehow. then i would be depressed about my weight gain, but turn to food to comfort me..it was a vicious cycle. when i would muster the courage to work out, i wouldn't see results fast enough, so i'd give up. or i would be too embarrassed to go to the gym..i'd think people were thinking "oh man look at that whale trying to work out.."

hope this gave you some insight on how i/we think

omg, i cant believe there is such ignorance and shallow ideologies when it comes to being overweight. those of you that say it is depression, addiction, obsession, compulsiveness, medical conditions, YOU ARE CORRECT! the excessively obese, the super size 500+ folks that only seem to get bigger, they have deeper issues than any of us can begin to speculate. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH NOT CARING HOW YOU LOOK OR BEING LAZY! please dont judge them or make assumptions on how or why they got the way they did. educate yourself on how to manage your own weight and do not ridicule those that dont.

Addiction to food and depression. It is hard to change your eating habits if you have been gourging food all of your life.
