Dante's explanation was that Satan originally was the Archangel Lucifer (bringer of light). (There were other Archangels: Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Raguel, and Sariel)
Lucifer challenged God's authority and was expelled from Heaven into Hell. At which point Gabriel or Michael (depending on interpretation) became the lead.
From a more philosophical angle, if every action has an equal and opposite reaction, or if every charge has an opposite, then God, being the representation of all that is Good, would be opposed by Satan, being the representation of all that is Evil.

In ancient Jewish tradition Satan is simply an angel doing the work that God assigned to Satan to do.
The word Satan means challenger. With the idea of Satan challenging us, or tempting if you will. This description sees Satan as the angel who is the embodiment of man's challenges. This idea of Satan works closely with God as an integral part of Gods plan for us. His job is to make choosing good over evil enough of a challenge so that it becomes clear to us that there can be only one meaningful or logical choice.
Contrast this to Christianity, which sees Satan as God's opponent. In Jewish thought, the idea that there exists anything capable of setting itself up as God's opponent would be considered polytheistic or setting up the devil to be an equally powerful polarity to god or a demigod.
Oddly, proof for The Christian satan/devil mythology is supposedly found in the ancient Jewish texts that were borrowed to create the bible. One can’t help but wonder how Christians came up with such a fantastically different interpretation of Gods assistant Satan in their theology.
Other hints about Satan’s role in human relations can be seen if you look at the name Lucifer. It meaning in the original tongue translates as Light bearer or light bringer. Essentially the bringer of enlightenment. The temptations of the Satan idea bring all of us eventually into Gods light. Hardly the Evil entity of Christian mythology.

Before he was kicked out of heaven, he was called Lucifer the angel of light or morning star. Is. 14:12 He wanted to be equal with God and he was very much full of pride that he tried to overthrow God. He took 1/3 of God's angels with him to the pit or Sheol. Satan tricked Adam and Eve by saying that they would be like God if they ate the fruit. Satan is the father of lies. He is out to kill, steal and destroy those who follow God.

An angel who rebelled against God and was thrown out of heaven. Now he wants to take as many down with him as he can.
Revelations 12:7-9 And there was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.

satan is a being created by God to work directly with God. satan, known then as lucifer, was very close to God. lucifer got to thinking he could take God's place and led a rebelion against God. A third of the angels followed lucifer. God cast them out of heaven... satan, as he was then called, and some of the fallen angels were confined to earth and satan is concidered the prince of the earth... he is the source of all evil and is the deceiver who leads gullable mankind astray inorder to keep them from returning to God.

He was an angel. One that stayed at the right hand of the Father at all times, until he thought that he could be God. He wanted to take the Father's place in the Heavens and rule all. He was casted out of Heaven into hell. Now remember that God cast him into hell and there was only Heaven and the earth so what is hell?

an angel that's created from fire. he lived in heaven until the day when God told all angels to bow down to Adam and they all did except for Iblis AKA Satan he refused to bow down and that's when God kicked him out of heaven and promised him Hell. Satan got mad and told God that he'll do all he can to distract people from worshiping God.

Okay a summary of the Islamic version.
Satan is a jinn who once used to worship Allah(sw) in paradise.Because of pride he refused to bow down to Adam(as).
He was then cast out of paradise and was going to hell but he pleaded for Allah(sw) to spare his life till the day of judgment so he could lead mankind astray.Allah(sw) allowed him his plea but told him that he could try but he will not be able to lead astray his righteous believers.Up till today he is still on his mission to take everyone to hell with him.
