Not prohibition but lmimtation...Which is putting standards for mixing the two sexes socially...In the university here in my city males and females are not separated but from ourselves males set in one side and females sit in the other..also in social events women stay and talk togeather while men gather togeather..It differs in its degree from a country to another..as in Saudi Arabia there is nearly complete separation in everything..other countries like Egypt it is up to people themselves who apply this limitation or not like in my college example..In other colleges in Cairo there is complete mixing.
The conclusion is :
1.The aim of this limitation is to protect the community in the first place from adultery and rape crimes.
2.It differs according to the traditions and customs of the community itself.
3.It differs also according to the age and position of people..high school students are not like college which are not like doctors in hospitals.
I hope you made a good understanding from this answer and the other answers.

It is not only a Muslim prohibition, but used to be a Jewish or Christian prohibition also. Many young people are distracted from the business at hand.. lol.. or worship of the Holy One and think more about that beautiful girl or that handsome boy in the Church.
Islam wants the worship of the Lord to be pure. When a boy or a man comes to the Mosque, he would never come to "check out" the famales, but only to worship the Most High.
Seclusion of men and women keeps the gatherings a social affair without any illicit sexual results. I have answered you sister in another question about the burdens of such a relationship.
Remember, that men and women do find each other and make commitments and marry in a Muslim society too. But we have a different set up. Why not consider our set-up as a parallel means of advancing society also?
I hope this makes sense. Please do check out my other answers. Would you? Please?

If you observe those social gatherings you will notice that many of the people who attend will end up doing sins (finding a girlfriend, boyfriend, mistress, one night stand, drinking alcohol, coming late home, not returning home, not spending time with children...etc)
So why should Islam as the True Religion encourage something so sinful?
