your personal essence, which is housed within your body, and when you die this soul is immortal and will not die, but will either go to heaven, or hell, or be reincarnated.

This notion of an "immortal soul" is actually not anywhere in the bible.

So my question is: Why has this idea become so universally accepted as true?

The devil told Eve that she would NOT surely die. For some reason, a lie sounds better than truth. There's some comfort in thinking that even though God said we would die that I could still live. You are rare. There are VERY FEW people who teach the mortally of the soul.

If the devil told the truth, well then God lied. If is a conditional word and it is not true in this situation. The soul does die. We wait in your graves unconscious UNTIL THE RESURRECTION WHEN THE RIGHTEOUS HEARS THE TRUMPET OF THE ARCHANGEL.
SO NO ONE WHO HAS DIED IS IN HEAVEN OR HELL AT THIS MOMENT.

I don't know, but Satan is the ruler of this world and as such has his hand in everything.

lets take a look at some scriptures that prove it shall we.

the word translated soul in Hebrew is ne phesh and in Greek is psykhe

it is used in different ways in the scriptures but hear are a few examples from the KJ version

1 peter 3:20 God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was preparing, wherein few, that is eight souls were saved by water.

the souls mentioned here referred to Noah his wife three sons and there wives (people not entities)

Numbers 31:28 one soul of five hundred, both of persons and of the beeves and of the asses and of the sheep.

here the word soul refers to both people and animals

in the KJ version of the bible most occurrences of the Greek word
psykhe is translated as life or living etc. this would interest most psychics as this is where there name came from.

so to round it up a soul is the living person or animal and not a seperate entity that departs from the body at death to a better existence.

Because the Souls of those wise enough to know about it will have re-incarnated many times, and are on their way to earning themselves immortality. Those Souls who will not come back, usually do not share this belief.

If the topic interests you, you would find an entirely logical explanation of what a Soul is, how it came about, and how it evolves, in "Rational Spirituality" on the Dhaxem website.

because it makes people feel better. It's way to scary to think that we are all going to die. The eternal nature of the soul is wishful thinking (or course, it could be true).

The bible talks about everlasting punishment in hell and everlasting life in heaven, thus immortal soul sums it up.

If we have Eternal Life through Jesus Christ, we will spend eternity in Heaven. Either way you are going to Heaven or Hell - it is your choice. Our spirit goes back to God.

You are incorrect that the immortal soul is not spoken of in the Bible. It is often refered to by Abraham as the connection to God that was internal to his being. It was inherent to the Blessings that Isaac was to pass on to his sons, Jacob and Esau. Simeon and Levi refer to the soul as that which counsels and connects obedience to God in their earthly bodies. God, in Leviticus, speaks of His soul dwelling among Israel, not abhoring obedience, abhoring disobedience, dwelling with Israel. Hannah speaks of pouring out her soul to the Lord when she gave Him all her troubles and her vow. There are numorous passages mentioning a living soul in the context of an immortal soul. Job spoke of his soul in both body and eternal contexts. David speaks of God redeeming his soul from the grave and receiving him in Heaven. In fact, David has more to say about the eternal soul than any one person in the Bible. He longs for the Lord to lift his soul, receive his soul in the Lords courts, and that his soul may serve the Lord for eternity. He also speaks of the soul as an internal connection between the man and God, a knowledge of goodness. Isaish speaks of deliverance of the soul. He speaks of His Soul, meaning God's soul. God tells Ezekiel that He has delivered his soul ALIVE. Jesus states that the Father will not leave His soul in Hades. Paul says that God can divide the soul and spirit as He discerns the hearts of man. There are numerous indications that the soul is the connection with God that is internally and eternally inherent to man. It is often used in reference to the spirit or a man, interchangeable and having only one distinction: the writing style of the author. I don't know exactly what the difference between soul and spirit are, but I know there are many, many references to the soul and many instructions about how to reserve the soul to God, alone. It does seem to be eternal, else why would so many have refered to it as such. The exact phrase, "immortal soul" does not appear in any version of the Bible that I have; but it is certainly in the context of many, many references. I tend to believe that the spirit of man and the soul of man are directly related but somehow not the same...else why would Paul say God is able to divide them to the discernment of the heart. Perhaps the spirit belongs exclusively to God and the soul belongs to God and man. I don't know. As to your question, people believe in an immortal soul because the Bible supports it.

Actually, it is. You need to read your bible more throughly. Matthew 10:28, and Matt.16: 26.
