I know my Babies talk to me, and they also KEEP a Diary which I found the other day. I think I made a mistake when I read it, because they have said some things that I am wondering about. Here is what I have found that they have written concerning me. Frightening isn't it. I hope you can take it. If I am not online Monday, please forward this to the proper authorities. (the ASPCA)
DAY 752 - My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while I am forced to eat dry cereal. The only thing that keeps me going is the hope of escape, and the mild satisfaction I get from ruining the occasional piece of furniture. Tomorrow I may eat another houseplant.
DAY 761 - Today my attempt to kill my captors by weaving around their feet while they were walking almost succeeded, must try this at the top of the stairs. In an attempt to disgust and repulse these vile oppressors, I once again induced myself to vomit on their favorite chair...must try this on their bed.
DAY 765 - Decapitated a mouse and brought them the headless body, in attempt to make them aware of what I am capable of, and to try to strike fear into their hearts. They only cooed and condescended about what a good little cat I was...Hmmm. Not working according to plan.
DAY 768 - I am finally aware of how sadistic they are. For no good reason I was chosen for the water torture. This time, however, it included a burning foamy chemical called "shampoo." What sick minds could invent such a liquid? My only consolation is the piece of thumb still stuck between my teeth. Well, that and the fact that the dog was the next victim after me.
DAY 771 - There was some sort of gathering of their accomplices. I was placed in solitary throughout the event. However, I could hear the noise and smell the foul odor of the glass tubes they call "beer". More importantly, I overheard that my confinement was due to MY power of "allergies." Must learn what this is and how to use it to my advantage.
DAY 774 - I am convinced the other captives are flunkies and maybe snitches. The dog is routinely released and seems more than happy to return. He is obviously a half-wit. The bird on the other hand has got to be an informant, and speaks with them regularly. I am certain he reports my every move. Due to his current placement in the metal room his safety is assured. But I can wait, it is only a matter of time...

OK lol. MY cat seems to fully well understand me when I talk to her. All I Have to do is say no and she stops what ever she is doing. Get and she gets. Come and she comes. She eats off of my dishes (I give them to her. Not my dinner)
When I sit on the floor against the chair she sits on the chair and lays her front legs and head down and sleeps on my shoulder. She sleeps between my side and left arm every night with her head on my arm. She Almost meow/chirps when she wants tuna and blats when she wants fresh water. She will present an attitude to my g/f when she comes home. ( I think they are equally jealus of each other) My cat is more like a person to me and gets treated like one.

Cats tune into your personality and feelings. They can read what you want, likes and dislikes. They can not understand words but can associate the tones of the words you use to food, happiness, playfullness and more.
I have a kitten 10 mos old. We are teaching her her name by repeating it and then putting it into sentences. We try to use the same tone always. I have a sentence I say when ever I have been away from home and then walk through the door. She relates to it and comes to greet me. If she does not hear that she hides.
Cats are smarter than people realize and they can do whatever to please their owners (mommy). When you use repetition all animals know what to expect. Like cut the toenails means a treat. Babies are the same. Put baby in crib it means sleep.
Cats are trainable but only if they want to learn what you are teaching. Dogs only want to please and will do anything you want. Cats are their own little persons.

That is so sweet, and in a way they really are talking to you. In a kitty language of their own. As far as them understanding what we say I think they listen more to our tone of voice and look at our body language....however, I would not rule out cats being able to understand as many as 20 to 25 words spoken frequently from your lips. I doubt if they understand them the same way we mean them but we still communicate with cats and they communicate with us on an emotional level if not a cognizant level.

I believe they can understand certain words and routines. My little Himalayan is a smartie, when I am getting ready in the morning she purrs and when she stops I look at her and stay Gracie, where's my music and she will purr some more. If I call her name, she will come running from what ever mischief she was in, just to see what I want. When she is hungry she guards her bowl, waiting for it to be filled, when she is getting ready to get into trouble and I say no, Gracie, she will stop and look at me with her big blue eyes. Gracie is young, but certainly communicative and such a joy in my life.

My cats will sit and listen to every word, which is unusal for cats, I think. They respond and they mind, (which is better than I get from my grandson) . LOL! I think their intelligence & their attention span depends on how much time you spend with them.
Until a few years ago, I was not a cat person, but now I kinda like 'em. :)

Oh yes, they understand. My cat will (sometimes) obey when I tell him something. He knows the difference between who "Mommy" (me), "Grandma" and "Grandpa" are. One day we were on the bed, I actually asked him, "You understand me, don't you?" and he spun around and looked me right in the eyes. I took that as a "yes".

Oh yes, yes, yes. My cats understand:
Do you want a treat?
Are you ready for bed?
Do you wanna cuddle?
(when there's a noise outside) What's that??!!
Look Fluffy!!! Look Milo!! Look!!
Are you hungry?
