spend so long looking for a place to have a wee or poopy before settling down to it?

I have just spent 10 minutes watching one of my cats run around the garden in the pouring rain trying to decide where to do it. Hilarious !!

Being fussy and clean animals, they like to go where there is gravel so they can cover it up which is better than having a dog who'll just cr*p anywhere and everywhere

Are you sure the cat's not sick? That can be a sign of having trouble peeing, which can mean it has a bladder infection.
And, come on, girls are the same way. We have to pick the most perfectly clean place to go. I have looked and fussed longer than that.

A cat is a predator in the wild. Predators carefully select their places to relieve themselves, and then cover their "traces" by instinct, so as not to frighten off their prey.

Your cat is just being a "tiny tiger" and making sure none of the antelope in your backyard know that he's around.

My cat has a litter box so I'm not sure.I assume it's like a dog, they want to mark their territory.

In my opinion, cats are perfectionists. They need to find the perfect spot, else they find somewhere else.
