Mommy is feeling fat and overwhelmed. Personal items like pretty housecoat or Bath & Body stuff are the bomb when a person is feeling less than attractive. Herbal tea is great, especially something like sleepy time tea or raspberry tea and a teapot. Watching the new babe for a few hours one afternoon so Mommy can rest for a while or take a walk. Most new mommys have gotten everything in a shower that is needed but it never hurts to call and find out if anything is needed.

Diapers, wipes and newborn sized clothing. At baby showers you mostly get 3-6 month sized clothes because babies grow out of clothes so fast, but they don't just come out fitting into 3-6 month sizes. There are a few weeks that they need newborn sizes. Onsies and sleepers are always good for new babies. Get the ones that snap at the crotch. Those are the easiest to use. Also socks that fold over with lots of elastic seem to fit the babies better, and stay on longer.

The best things I got when I was a first time mom were pre-made dinners and diapers.
I was soooo excited to not have to worry about making food for a few days and at first it seems like diaper changes are never-ending so it really helps to get some from people since you are most likely too exausted to run out to buy them yourself all the time.

When my wife and i had our baby a four months ago we had everything we needed at home. but dappers and wipes for later are appreciated. What would be real nice if you go over on a off day and made a meal or brought a meal if you can't cook. In the first part of the day she can show you how she likes the baby changed etc. and if she is not breast feeding you can let her take a nap and you take care of the baby for a few hours

I know the things I used to run out of were nappies and formula!!
However if you want a slightly more interesting present how about some babybath, baby shampoo and baby lotion. Or perhaps a nice soft towel.
If you are looking to spend more fitted cot sheets are always useful as you have to wash them a fair bit when they are young.
Don't get a cuddly toy, they are totally useless and most of the ones I had for my girls have never been played with.

what I usually do is get a small cloths basket, or a cute toy or something like that, and fill it with things that mommy will need, like baby wash, baby shampoo, washcloths, onsies, a little note that says something like if you need a nap, give me a call, and I'll come sit with the little one so you can sleep. Just things that will help in the long or short run.
Hope this helps. good luck.

While diapers and sleep and lil' nic-nacs are nice, The BEST thing that a friend did for me was she came over like, a week and a half after I had my daughter and my hubby had gone back to work
and she did dishes and vaccummed etc... it was wonderful. Because by the second week, that energy surge I had gotten after having the baby was long gone and by her doing that for me, i was able to get that MUCH needed rest. It was funny, she was like no if ands or buts, get in the bed!

the best gift would be for you to hang out with the baby and let mom get some rest...if you can't do that , definatly get her some diapers and maybe some formula if she need it.. most people don't think of the things that are used the most.

Nappies, sleep, baby wipes, sleep, cotton wool, nappy cream, breast pads, sleep, a nice soft cushion to sit on, some one to do the cooking and laundry, how about offering to do her shopping for her for a little while? She'll be desperate for some time to herself, so if you can, watch the little one whilst she has a bubble bath.
Or, you could just ask her directly what she personally needs.

Gift Card. So the mom would decide for both mom and baby needs.
