You really do need to get your dog veterinary care for this, as in addition to pain and disfigurement an injury like that could become infected, which is a severe condition that could lead to consequences up to and including death. Check with local vets and humane societies to see if you can work something out with a deal or payment plan. As it stands your dog probably only needs a couple stitches to prevent tearing and proper treatment of the wound, but the problem could become MUCH more serious, and treating it would similarly be much more difficult and expensive.

I urge you to do whatever you can to get him properly treated, but if you cannot or will not, for the sake of your dog, here is the best you can do: First, if you haven't already, thoroughly clean the wound with fresh, clean water. Do NOT use any disinfectants such as rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide, as they are not designed for internal use and are likely to be poisonous. Until the wound heals, check it often, a few times a day, for any sign of redness, swelling, discoloration, or any other unusual signs that could indicate infection. If you spot any such signs, you MUST take him to a vet, because his life will be in imminent danger. Until the wound heals, watch what you feed him and where he goes and what he does to best avoid the chance of infection. That means feed him only dog food that has not been left out at all (throw away anything he doesn't eat within say 30 minutes or so), replace his water several times a day, and avoid situations where he might lick something he'll pick up germs from.

Again, this is going to be FAR less effective than getting your dog proper care, and much more difficult as well. If you take him to a vet you're not likely to have to do anything special other than give him antibiotics for a few days and watch for infection, and your dog will still be much better off.

If you couldn't afford vet care, then why did you get a dog??? That would be as stupid as buying a car and having no money to pay for gas. A vet is essential in a dogs life.

Your dog needs to go to the vet - that is sad to let an animal suffer. You need to take him and see if the vet will work out some sort of payment plan or something but you can't just let it go - it could get worse and then where will you be?

Yes Vets charge way too much these days. However..don't know where you live but should be able to call the local SPCA or Animal Shelter and ask them for help. Help the dog somehow! The only thing I can think of right now would be to apply ice pack to stop any bleeding.

If you cannot afford a vet you should not have a pet, an injury of this type needs proper cleaning and stitches, as well as antibiotics to keep your dog from infections from both the wound, and the can it cut itself on.

I understand that you can't afford vet care, but your dog may be in pain. Dogs do not show pain, like we do. I seriously suggest you take your dog to the vet, they may be willing to work with you on payments. Perhaps you could try a local rescue organization to see if they have any programs that could assist you without taking your dog.

I don't want to sound critical or judgemental, but I am afraid that your dog could be in pain or it may be infected.

Call a vet or animal shelter for help--but seriously if you can't afford to take care of him consider adopting him out. This makes me sad--I am nurse and know that they do not stitch tongues in humans so maybe it will take care of itself.
