I am restoring an 81 yr old house that had neglected hardwood floors with the same kind of stains (can be caused from the nails holding the carpet down, pet stains, water, etc.).

You can find wood bleach (also called oxalic acid) at your local hardware store. Be VERY careful when using this chemical - gloves, protective eyewear and long sleeves/pants are a MUST. Be careful not to breathe the solution and work in a well ventilated area as well.

All in all, it didn't remove the stains completely, but it did lighten them enough to warrant the refinishing of the floors. (I was going to install engineered hardwood flooring over the original floors)

To remove stains:
Dissolve 12 to 16 ounces of oxalic acid crystals into one gallon (or 2-4 oz. in a quart) of hot water.
Use solution while hot, with a scrub brush.
Apply liberally allowing solution to remain on surface until desired lightness has been achieved.
If solution cools before job is finished, reheat solution (do not boil).
Triple rinse thouroughly with clean water
and allow to dry.

Good luck to you!!!

It really depends on what kind of stain it is. Is the hardwood sealed with a varnish?

You can rent a hardwood sander but be careful you can reck the floor with it too.
