Because they are so sweet and so beautiful we just can't help it.
If I had $1 for every time I've kissed my baby everyone on Answers could retire & I keep support them, LOL!

I think we probably are so attracted to giving babies affection is because they are small and represent innocence to us. We are genetically programmed to think that babies are "cute" so back in the caveman days we would protect them so they would have a better chance to survive.

Well, the reasons given are true, but I wonder if this one might also have its place: Because they can't stop us from doing it, they can't slap our faces, or complain, or make us feel that we are being rude. That's why with babies or small children we should be careful we are not forcing our affectionate gestures on them.

Because they're so fat and cute. It's like all that extra padding was made especially for kissing.

I suppose it's instinct isn't it, my little girl is 6 and I still do it to her all the time, even though she squeals and tells me to get off!!!especially in the school yard!!

We're genetically hardwired for it. We WANT to take care of children and love them. Those that don't are extremely rare.
