My neighbor used to do it. He got to old to walk his dog so that is exactly what he did. Sometimes though he'd forget he had the dog with him. It was in town so he never went very fast but once in a while he'd drive for a couple hours and the dam dog was almost draggin' beside the car. He did it for about a month and then decided that the dog must have been gettin' old too cause all it would do was sleep when he brought it home.

You may have seen photos of people doing this- and some do. It's is an exercise technique that some German shepherd breeders popularized some years back.
However the shots were taken on open farm land, where there we no other cars and the cars were going very slow.
If this is a serious question, I'd say it's much better to get a leash hookup for your bicycle ( they make em) and take your dog running while you ride your bike...

No, this is not safe and not legal. Why don't you try training him to run alongside a bicycle? There are really neat contraptions that you can buy at the pet store for bikes. One is a bolt-on arm that extends a couple of feet from your bike that has a sturdy spring to attach a very short leash to, so your dog cannot crossover(crashing your bike). Dogs take to this very quickly. It one of the safest and most fun ways to wear them out quickly.

This would be classified as borderline animal cruelty.
If a police officer saw you doing this, you would more than likely be cited with a fine.
There is no law against it, however there are morality acts with the humane society.
And NO, it is not safe, whether you have a convertible or not.
Imagine if your dog decides he can't run anymore, and you are paying attention to the road and not him, you would literally be dragging him.
Food fo thought.

Why not get off your butt and run with the dog, there's a good chance it won't hurt you, but you can't tie a dog to a car.

Given the high price of gas and the obvious animal cruelty issues, I would say not to tow your dog with your car.
If you are serious about exercising your dog check out a doggy treadmill (see below).
Best of luck.

Ummmm, first of all, I do think that is illegal... and second of all, don't you think that when you are driving down the road, people will think you are cruel and inhumane? That's just my opinion... If you want your dog to get more excerisize, then I think you should hire a dag walker to take your dog out on daily long walks.

It's illegal-go to the top of a very steep hill and throw a ball for him to fetch-it goes further and he gets a real work out from running back!!

Do you want to wind up in court charged with cruelty to animals. Try it & see how long it takes to be reported. At least I would hope somebody would.
Don't do anything to your animal you would not do to a person. You are that responsible for the creature.
