Try the direct approach,( do not write the job application) put it on an audio tape, do the same if you approach the author/publisher / recording company.
Your voice must not be intrusive to the authors words, your diction and pronunciation must be perfect. If you have a regional accent you may have to` lose it `whilst reading the story. It is helpful if you can adapt to other accents that the story`s characters may require. You will be up against stiff competition from professional artistes.( Very often an audio book will be purchased because it is spoken by a professional, this certainly boosts sales). At first try a lesser known company where you do not have to compete against"stars",you will gather experience and confidence with every step.
It is an idea, when you send your "audio application".to address it by name to the person who does the hiring. Also, why not gift wrap it? It will stand out from the other applications, and may be opened immediately, instead of stuck via the `in` tray all day.
Good luck!

With great difficulty! I've been told that I have a very good reading voice, but unfortunately most work goes to recognised voices in the world of TV and theatre. You could try the RNIB; I found them the most helpful.

Celebrities do a lot of those so I imagine it is tricky for an inexperienced and unknown person to get this gig. I would suggest sending a letter and resume to the publishers of those books.

Most "readers" of audio books have a soothing voice, you don't need to be a celebrity to have this quality. You do need to know how to accentuate your talking, and have a good sense of meter to avoid being boring.

Try and get voice over work first. You can do this by looking in The Stage newspaper and go from there.

How likely is it you will get this highly-skilled area of work if you cannot punctuate a sentence?
Voice-over work is some of the highest-paid areas of the industry.
You don't just walk in off the street.
Jeez!
