Is that what you kids are calling it today? When I 'churn my butter' I do the breaststroke and watch reruns of the Rosie O'Donnell Show.

Well, normally when my mom and grandma used to do it, they would use the hand held wooden churner and churn the buttermilk in a big pot. The movement used you would be a combination of clockwise and anti-clockwise movements alternated at every move. Now I use the electric mixer and it goes in the clockwise movement.

If you are making butter in the Northern hemisphere, use a clockwise motion. If you are in the Southern hemisphere, use counterclockwise.

The direction doesn't matter.I used to make small batches of butter in a mason jar and roll it back and forth with my foot while watching TV!

It does not matter. You can put the cream in a jar and shake it.
