People that buy XP with computers that have 256 mg of ram will usually have this problem. Right Mouse Button click on "My Computer" and go to Properties. You should see your Ram there. If you have 256, you need to get more because that's barely enough for just Windows to run.

Ram is inexpensive but you need the right type - so check your motherboard sheet or your paperwork. I suggest a MINIMUM of 512. I used to sell computers and would actually argue with people that wouldn't get the 512 - used to cost more - but now a GIG of ram is the standard. XP is a memory hog.

The ONLY other thing you can do is close some of the programs running on the lower right hand part of your computer (where your AV is sitting) - if you have Weatherbug there or something because anything on the right hand side is using your precious ram. Check your specs as instructed FIRST - 256 is not enough.
