Codeine is one of the substances present in Opium. Opium has a long history associated with the Opium Poppy flower. As far back as unrecorded history medical men used ground poppy flowers such as the Papaver Somniferum as a treatment for pain. The pod would be ground and turned into an unpleasant to drink tea. In modern history after technology was developed to extract pure opium from the plant, opium injection would be used as a pain and anxiety relief agent.

Codeine is derived from opium. But unlike cocaine and other opiates bought on the street these days, it has a controlled dose.
Sigmund Freud used cocaine in a operation at the turn of the century, but one of his colleges, claimed it was his idea.
Freud felt cheated, but actually it was a blessing in disguise, cause the patient grew addicted, and Freud's reputation was left in tack.
Opium has being around much longer, but that event was a very important recent introduction of opium in the medical field.
