Why do religious people become offended when the existence of god is brought into question? Isn’t a world without religion better?
No 9/11, no witch hunts, no persecution of the Jews, no Taliban, no crusades, no serb/croat/muslim massacres, no “troubles” in Northern Ireland

because it usually comes from pure ignorance and preposterous assumptions, like the ones you make in your question...

It is not considered wrong to question religion or believes. In Vedanta Sutra it is stated that Spiritual Knowledge begins from such enquiry.

But the attitude in asking Question is important. Even if you feel that some thing is not clear or contradictory, you can question for answers.
But most People, they presume an answer and then ask a question. The same is seen in your present question also. You have doubt on existence of God but you have already presumed that world is a better place without religion or God.
This presumption is wrong, as in that mind set, you will not hear to others Answers.

All the problems that you have mentioned are because people have fallen down from Religious path. But you haven’t seen what havoc irreligion does.
Do you know how many babies have been killed in just his last 2 decades, because people think that there is no god that will punish them for this sinful act? Do you know how many people commit suicide or kill others just because they get frustrated and have no faith in God? The Count of just these 2 are much more than all the numbers that you add up.
You think the rapist, the thieves, the murderer, the molesters are Religious people? Rather Most of those who follow religion, don’t take to such practice, unless they have fallen from their religious principles.
You have counted how many would not die if there where no killing in name of Religion.
Now sit back and count how many would die if every one believes that we are just a bunch of Chemicals.

Religion gives people a framework which saves them from a dark, empty void.

That dark, empty void is titled by the question "What is the true meaning of life?"

In order not to have to deal with this question, we have created religion. For many, religion provides an answer to this question. For many others, religion's answers aren't good enough.

And the reason why religion's answers aren't good enough are clearly stated in your question: That one person's religion says this, and another person's religion says the opposite, and this difference causes conflict.

But when we look beyond all the difference, it is far more threatening than conflict, because in that dark, empty space, there are only open basic questions about our existence, and no one there to answer them: "What is the meaning of life?" "Who am I?" "Where did I come from, Where am I headed?" "What is the purpose of pain in the world?" "What is reality?"...

And this threat to a person's identity and their whole being is worth having wars and conflicts over: either from a mass "this country vs. that country" war, to the many wars of opinions that occur on forums like this.

If we all had to face these questions without the answers that religions provide, we would truly feel suffering like we've never felt before: an unresolved emptiness. And the fact that more and more people are becoming dissatisfied with religions' answers these days is a true sign that these questions are opening up more and we are really starting to develop a true desire to discover the meaning of our existence.

Things like wars and conflicts, and all kinds of suffering that come from differences in opinion are there to point the way into this most fundamental question: "What is the true meaning of life?" ...

In Islam it is required that one QUESTION, ASK and UNDERSTAND before you believe. Every Muslim does not necessarily do that, as many are born into the faith. However, many who convert to Islam (and many do), have asked the question and have come to the conclusion of the truth of Islam, through clear thinking and consistent logic.

Please do not blame religion for all the calamities that have taken place in this World. Hitler was not religious. Sixty million died in World War II. Millions died in World War I as well. It was not a religious war. Two million were killed by Pol Pot in Cambodia. Millions more were killed by Mao Tse Tung in China to bring about the RED REVOLUTION. Many people were killed by the Shining path geurillas in South America. All the conflicts in South America were non-religious in which millions died.

In the past Atilla the Hun, Genghhis khan, the Roman armies or the armies of Alexander, Pharoahs or the kings of various sort have been killing people for personal gain.

It is a very skewered thinking to say that 3000 killed on 911 or a few killed here or there are because of religion are comparable to any of the many killings that have taken place enmasse over the centuries.

In fact, until fairly recently, all religions were living in peace for centuries. All religions have long histories. Yes, people from time to time have fought, but the current phenomenon of religious people attacking or killing is a very new and "modern" concept and it certainly pales in comparision to the millions that were killed enmasse in the past.

I hope this will make you re-think the evil of "religion".

Sit back and watch the fireworks....

Bound to be plenty of complaining after that question.

Personally I agree with you, early man invented religion as a way of understanding things they could not, now science can give us a lot of those answers.

Religion is a way of living life with all the answers already given, most of the rules already made an uncertain future made certain. Some people don't like not knowing, it upsets them, so they hang onto something that they do know, and ignore all the flaws and impracticality.

It's not bad to question religion but it is very insulting to mock one's religion. All I see on Yahoo Answers is Islam bashing,..you dont see any Muslim bashing any other religion do you?? because Muslims respect other religions and their prophets. Whatever happened on 9/11 does not represent the entire religion..that were extremist people who hijacked Islam as their religion and killed innocents. What's happening in Iraq is not religious either, it's our crazy president killing innocents for oil

You are free to question everything ~ that's the beauty of the freedom we have to explore and create. However, as you question hopefully you will find answers and come to make decisions based on the truths you discover along the way. I did that for years - studied all kinds of philosophies, religions etc. I found that I needed and wanted to have a "relationship" with my Creator and the only way to do that was through Jesus Christ. John 14:6 - so check it out and if you're logical - you'll find the truth as I did. Be wise. Love to you!

You are onto something...

Part of one's religious training is the belief that your religion is the ONLY ONE TRUE religion. When someone questions you, you feel both offended that they don't know you're right and they're wrong, in addition to sorry for them that they haven't found the ONE TRUE WAY.
Its all hogwash, if you ask me - and just LOOK at the trouble its causing, all in the name of God...

religion is anything that man does to become closer to god, rites, crap like that.

that DOES NOT mean a thing to god.

god only wants you to believe in him that he can make you better in every aspect. that is not fanatism. and it says in the scripture that you cannot judg others.

and that if somebody wants to remain ignorant, just let them be.

god allowed us freedom of choice, we cannot cram god down anybodys throat.

as xtians we have the task to talk about and spread the word, not yto force it.

just like you plant a seed, but do not push it into the ground. u place the seed delicately, it might grow, you grind it in, you might ruin it.

Man has been at war for ever, many times not for Religion.

War is caused when man fails God, not when God fails Man.

The lack of God in our lives causes wars, even though some claim to go to war for God, there is always another reason. (Keeping Power, Gaining Power, Keeping wealth, Gaining wealth, ect.)

Peace!
