I am thinking about getting a medium sized dog - but only have cat experience. We like the looks & apparent temperment of these two breeds, but would like to hear from folks with some first hand experience. Please tell me what you think of them? Do they require a lot of care? Do they have good personalities? Let me know! Thanks!

I personally would prefer a corgi to a shiba. I find the corgi a lot more social with people and other pets in general. Shiba's are going to be more protective and maybe a little yappier. Both would need a bit of exercise, along with a good regular brushing. I simply like the corgi personality better, they always seem happy.

Well, I personally don't like Corgi's at all, but I love Shibas. Shibas are a little yappy, but not as bad as the Corgi's I've been around! Shiba's are very stand offish with new people(and even some family members) where Corgi's tend to be very social. Corgi's are likely to nip in their efforts to "herd" you, where as a Shiba is more likely to bite if they don't get their way! Corgi's are quite a bit easier to train, as Shiba's are hard headed(not stupid, just stubborn)!

These breeds have some major differences in tempermant, and both need some firm, fair obedience training. The main thing you need to decide, though, is do you want a people dog, or one that is not so friendly?

Pembroke Welsh Corgi-
this breed was developed in pembrokeshire, wales, as an all purpose farm dog that herded cattle and geese. it is very closely related to the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. they are generally around 25-30lbs and 10-12 inches.
like the cardigan..this is a big dog in a small package. they are active, intelligent, and fun loving dog that gets along w/most everyone. it does well w/children..it will be very devoted to its family..but can be very headstrong. it does well w/an active home and can live in rural or suburban homes.

Shiba Inu-
the shiba inu is the smallest and oldest dog of japan's native breed. it was bred to flush birds and small game. it is considered a natural monument in japan. it came close to extinction after WW II. they were first brought to the US in 1954.
they weigh about 15-25 lbs. this is a very alert, curious, intelligent dog with a lively fun loving personality. it is very independent and known to wander.

i have never owned either of these breeds....but here is some info on them for you.

i would probbaly go with the corgi, shibas arnt great in multi pet households and still retain a strong hunting instinct (cats, squirrels, small children...all are fun to chase!)
Shibas tend to be a little higher energy, and harder to train (there very independant and probably a breed better suited for dog owners already experienced in training BULLY breeds.

Corgies on the other hand are herding dogs (dont be suprised if your corgi tries to herd you, your visitors or other pets) they tend to be quieter dogs than shibas and are certianly easier to train!
There a little better well rounded, but your going to have a little more upkeep on the coat.

both are beautiful breeds but i think the corgi is better suited as a pet and shiba better suited for a home that will nuture its headstrong hunting instinct.
