My husband (who has 2 grown boys) says that they should get their first tool set. At Toys R Us they have scaled down versions (but not plastic) of tools so they can go out and learn how to hammer and such. Even if it's a piece of scrap wood to a tree.
I'd say something like Legos. I loved Legos at that age. It's a very creative hobby.

My son just turned 8. His favorite gift by far was the Nintendo DS Lite that he bought with his birthday money. (It is expensive - $129.99). Other than that the "only thing he wanted" was a new Pokemon game "Mystery Dungeon",$30.00. He is a music lover and was excited about "Kids Bop 9" and he loved the little things, like a Whoopi cushion. He did receive books which he already read (he loves to read). I hope this helps.
