RICE
R = Rest it
I = Ice it
C = Compress it
E = Elevate it
I used to twist and sprain my ankles all the time back when I played softball. This is what my Dr. always told me. Its kinda funny that I could call the office and tell them exactly how it turned when I hurt it and he would tell me which brace to use for the next couple of days... I had a stockpile of those damn things :(

Definitely use ice. Keep it on your ankle for 15 minutes and then take it off for 15 minutes. Alternate back and forth. Also, keep it elevated (but not too high) and stay off of it. If the swelling doesn't go down to an acceptable level, I'd consider seeing a doctor for x-rays and possibly not running that marathon on Sunday. If there is extensive bruising, you may have torn something.

The quickest and most effective is Contrast baths!
i.e. A bag of Ice and a Bowl of Hot Water.
You place the ankle/Foot in the Hot water(As Hot as You can bear!) then Keep it in for a Long as you can stand the heat-Then Cover it with Ice (From a bag, or if you've enough a Bowl full)
This will reduce swelling immediately and aid healing of Ligaments and tendons.
take it easy on the ankle for a while after and do simple foot and Ligament Stretching Exercises.
Hope this helps You!

Believe it or not? A lot of green tea, and an ace bandage
around that ankle. Also drink a lot of water. Stay away from soda and junk foods or a lot of salt. Also elevate your leg, and put an ice pack around your ankle for 20 minutes at a time, and you should be good to go. If you have any vitamin B, take one of those per day. Good luck

I badly sprained my ankle about 3 weeks ago. I was in a hurry going down the stairs, lost my balance and landed on a bad side of my left foot, causing my left ankle to be stretched going on the inside. The first 48 hours were excruciating and the pain was un-believable. I've never had a serious ankle injury before.
So I immediately treated it using the RICE method. The following day, the bruising and swelling were so horrible. I found out that I got a second degree sprain and immediately panicked after that. I had a football game on that week and it been looking forward to it because I've been training for rt. I had teammates that had similar injuries and it took them months to fully recover, some of them stopped playing altogether. So I kinda had a short-term depression because I can't imagine myself not being able to run and play sports anymore.
Because I was so desperate to recover again, I contacted a lot of people that I know who do sports and asked them if they had similar injuries. One friend of mine, from the boy's football team in my university, told me about H.E.M. Ankle Rehab. I got a copy 4 days after I got injured. I immediately read and followed what was instructed and felt improvement on the first day. I was able to walk a bit, but I was in pain.
A couple of days after that, the swelling and bruising were subsid-ing significantly and on the fourth day, I was walking comfortably again. Although I've had felt a bit of stiffness, I continued doing what was instructed. My sister was surprised that I have recovered this fast. I told her about this book and was shocked on how effective the procedures were. I'm just so happy that this book was shared to me and how effective it is.
Heal your ankle fully & fast?

You might want to talk to a doctor about whether or not you should be running in Sunday's marathon! You may possibly make it much worse to the point of not being able to run any marathons in the future. Keep it elevated, wrap it and take motrin.

You want to run a marathon on a swollen ankle??? Good luck! You'll need it. 3 days isn't enough for it to heal. It can sprained. And if it isn't, running 26 miles will sprain it anyways.

if you run a marathon on sunday your ankle could be permanently damaged moron.
you need to wait for 6 weeks for the ankle to heal properly. if you wait for less than 6 days, you could damage it again and then your ankle would be damaged for sure and it wouls be permanently damaged. DO NOT run the marathon.
i hurt m ankle and did sports at school and it still hasn't healed since i sprained it really badly 1 and a half years ago

Elevate at a level above the heart (lay on a couch and put your leg up on pillows) and ice. Also take ibuprofen (motrin) for the inflammation.
