The Armies of the Light
Joshua 5:13-15
And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries? And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant? And the captain of the LORD's host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.
Here we see the Angel of the Lord appearing in His role as Commander-chief of the armies of heaven. As has been pointed out, this is a theophany of the pre-incarnate Christ.
I'm not saying that Jesus is an angel, but He is the leader of the angelic armies. In a way you could say that Jesus is the boss or leader or commander of Heaven?s angelic army.
When the armies of heaven show up en masse, Jesus is the one in charge. He is the commander-in-chief of the angelic host.
II Kings 6:17
And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.
In the end of days, Jesus will come leading the armies of heaven of which he is commander of. Here only two people saw the armies of light. The day is coming when every eye shall see Him split the sky wide open.
Matthew 26:52-53
Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.
Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?
The day is coming, when Jesus will show up at the head of the angelic legions of heaven. When He returns He will return as Lord of Lords, and King of Kings. He is coming with an army of angels.
This brings us to an interesting verse.
I Thessalonians
4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
So what is going on here? I believe that at Christ?s return He will be leading the armies of heaven and that He will be at their lead.
The Random house dictionary defines the term "arch" as:
1.) ...Individuals having authority over others...
2.) chief, leader, ruler.
I?m not saying that Jesus is an angel, but He is their leader ,commander and ruler.
Revelation 19:11-14
I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.
His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.
And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.
And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.
We often say that Jesus is returning to earth, which is true, but He?s not coming alone. The angelic armies which are in heaven are coming with Him.
An angelic army is heading for earth with Jesus at their head. In Thessalonians the term "archangel" should be understood to mean the leader or head of the angelic army which is headed our way
I think that Thessalonians speaks of His role as army commander.
I read through one commentary that said that some older translations of Thessalonians 4:16 read as "leader of the angels" Well thank God He's leading them angels our way, and yes, there will be a lot of shouting.
He will come with a shout.
