Motel is an abbreviation for motor hotel. It is marked by the accommodation of automobiles at or near the room being rented. Thus, motels are surrounded by parked cars, generally are one or two story and have few amenities outside the rooms.
Hotels on the other hand, either have no parking facilities or a parking garage, spacious lobbies, coffee shops, gift shops, meeting rooms, sometimes ballrooms, etc. They are often used by those staying a while, while the typical motel room is for one night while traveling

A motel is for a short stay, a hotel for longer, usually a week. A motel you can reach from the outside, from the parking place. A hotel has a lobby where you enter and register. A motel owner does not ask as much questions as a hotel owner, more is done in secrecy. Normally, a motel is cheaper as well and less chic.

Motel: Usually only rated 1 or 2 star. Sometimes no amenities such as a pool, bar/restaurant, activities, etc. These are less expensive due to the lack of amenities and the motels ratings.
Hotel: Can be rated anywhere from a 1 - 5 star. Depending on the rating will indicate the cleanliness of the accommodations, amenities, restaurant/bar/club options, activities, level of service, hotels grounds, room categories, etc. All of these are more are determinations as to where a hotel gets there star rating.
Resort: Usually rated 4 or 5 star. These are similar to hotels, however they tend to be a bit more posh and luxurious. Such as nicer bed sheets, softer towels, nicer bathroom toiletries, a little more luxurious rooms, more elaborate grounds, etc. This of course can vary to where a 5 star hotel and a 5 star resort are similar....really depends on the hotel/resort chain.
So there are exceptions to these definitions, but this is a good idea of the differences between the 3.

today the "hotel" business has basically overrun the "motel". Motel's were inexpensive places to say (usually family owned) and didn't offer all the eminities, where as a "hotel" did, ie: bar, restaurant, breakfast, tv etc. Today though, the motels are more refered to as dumps and the hotels are still that, hotels, and charging out the ying-yang for us that only want a bed, rest and shower when we're on the road.

a motel is more like a lodging place, a place for u to rest or relax, and not some luxurios place of comfort like an hotel. The price variation is such that the motel is much cheaper which also means that u cant expect great facilities....i hope that clears a lil sumthing....

A motel is a "motor hotel" - you drive up right to the door of your unit. In a hotel, the rooms are accessible from the inside of the building only.
