Oh my! There are so many problems with the “Fair Tax” I don’t know where to start. One is that the government is simply too inept to make the transition. We would end up with both the “Fair” and the Income tax during the transition. Then the lobbyist would get in the act and we would end up with both taxes forever. Look how much trouble they had with the Medicare drug benefit. Do you really think they can scrap the income tax and replace it with national sales tax without a meltdown?

Second, the “Prebate” is an open door to fraud and puts us all on the dole. Third the enforcement would be a nightmare. The Fair Tax supporters seem to think that everyone who is evading the income tax will fall right into line once we have a “Fair Tax”. The underground economy will grow even larger. Sorry I don’t see it working.

We have a progressive tax system in place capable of both collecting the revenue needed for government operation and being “Fair”. Problem is the tax system has become a tool for behavior modification and social engineering. Politicians have used it to reward certain groups and behaviors and to punish or discourage others.

I agree with the FairTax, but it will never happen because Democrats will lie to poor people until the end of time about the true nature of the FairTax.

Without poor people, there is no Democratic Party.

No, this plan needs a lot more thought. The flat tax seems a better way but it also needs some tuning

"doing away with" income tax is not as easy as it seems, especially with a country as large as the U.S.
to "do away with" income tax would have largescale repercussions such as massive hits to the economy in the area of unemployment -- think of all the accountants, income tax places, etc that would be out of work, they would be "on the system" and who pays for that -- the government from taxes!! and that's just the start.
There would have to be a complete rewriting of the tax codes etc.

Perhaps abolishing income tax would work better with smaller economies like Canada or Europe.
We're foolish, though, if we think they are going to abolish income for a "Fair Tax". I don't believe so.
