what you need is an RF meter it reads signal strength in decibals.
a good signal should be 20 decibals for an antennae or 1 db for cable.
hope i helped, by the way radio shack should have an economical one or your local electronics supply store

I use a Satvision cuz i install cable and dishes and some antennas for clients .It aint cheap at 300$ but it's my worktool .It's very precise and shows all frequencies in bar graphs to compare them to an ultimate signal .

Go to www.maplin.co.uk - or visit the store - they stock a RF device that will tell you the quality of signal
