Why are people religious?

Question

I'm doing a paper for my religion class and I need to interview or survey people and have them answer a few questions. If you are willing to help, please answer the following questions. Thank you so much!

3. What is your occupation or major field of study?

4. Name and/or describe the religious or other group you participate in. (Please, if you are Christian, tell what denomation you are such as baptist, pentacostal, catholic, etc.)

5. Why do you think people are religious? (Please give at least 5 sentences)

I am 61 years old, I am a woman, I am in the field office for a mining operation. and I am a Southern Baptist.
I think people are religious because there is a hunger to know God built into a persons soul. When I look at the sky, and at the way the world is made and at humans, the way we are made, opening and shutting my hand, I know there is a God and He is our Creator. We aren't an accident, we aren't descended from apes. We are intricate creations, made by a loving Father. The soul that He gave me tells me He is real, He loves me, and I cannot help but love Him back. No has ever and will never love me as much as He does. He is faithful and He promised me a home with Him forever and I can hardly wait. There is a need in the deepest part of our hearts that only He can fill. That's why I believe and trust Him. Not because I was told to believe, or made to believe but because I DO believe!

5. People are religious because the notion of a god helps explain things that are not understood or cannot be explained. Some people like the social aspect of belonging to a church. Some are religious out of fear (the threat of hell). Others are religious simply because they have been raised that way. As for atheists, many of us do not believe in god(s) because we have seen no evidence to support such a belief.

People are religious because.
1. They found that Existence of God is true.
2. God is pouring mercy on them.
3. Many people getting blessings from God by asking Him.
4. Governments also encouraging people to do religious practice.
5. Religious practices gives peace to people.
6. Christian religious practices are more peace full and comfortable than other religious practices.

Religion is a mental virus that takes advantage of a set of particular quirks in the way the human mind works. The first of these is the tendency to unquestioningly believe what authority figures tell us. The second is the tendency to exaggerate stories as they are retold. The third is the projection of personhood within the mind onto others. This trait tends to be a bit sloppy and we project personhood onto non-humans and even inanimate objects as well. The fourth is our tendency toward wishful thinking - our inate reasoning skills are not very good. The final trait is our survival instinct.

When you add these up, you end up with a system suceptible to religious thinking.

Depends on what you mean by religious. Check out these verses from the bible
Hebrews 10:11 "Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins."
Acts 17:22-23
"Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: "Men of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious. For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. Now what you worship as something unknown I am going to proclaim to you."

So, I don't count myself as religious literally because that could mean anything, I just count myself as one who has a relationship with God. I developed one because my life was going downhill and it was the only sensible thing to do to avoid hell and to join the side of good and renounce the side of evil in the spiritual war going on all around us. I believe people are religious because they are weak. They put all of their faith into something that could very possibly not exist. But, most people need that faith to hang onto. Because the possibility that there is nothing...gives them nothing. So they just deny the mere chance they are wrong. And pity those who don't follow what they believe. Well, I pity them. There are so many different religions in this world...and every single one of them believe that they are right...what if no one is? Nobody knows and I can't put faith into something I can't prove.

5 Sentances is a bit much. My opinion, and the one that seems to be the truth, is that it gives them peace of mind. Though I reckon some people just claimed to be religious in the past in order to rally people to their causes.

It gives humans something to hold on to.
We were all created to to have a parental figure in our lives, why not the most powerful.
It is a comfort in day to day life to know that I am not facing the world alone.
Some people see miracles, actual unbelievable miracles occur and then they realize that we are not alone in this world.
Some poeple are religious or say they are just because of tradition.

Keep in mind these are all just my opinion and I am in complete belief of the fact that there is a God and His son died for us 2006 years ago.

People believe in Religion for one reason or another, but possibly the main reason is the fear of death, or the unknown,or nothing happening when they die. But some people are religious, because they actually have THE FEELING of faith. Some are drones that follow thier parents denomination.
