Yes, I have heard of putting brown sugar in chili. Having in lived in Pennsylvania all my life, I personally have used white sugar to cut down the acidic & bitter taste in my chili. My uncle, god rest is soul always used brown sugar in his chili & it was to die for! While neither my uncle nor myself served a peanut butter sandwich with our chili, I don't find that to be gross. We had some kind of bread & toppings like cheese, sour cream, etc. alongside of it. For me, it's a matter of personal preference.

Never heard of that. I think I'll try the sugar in the chili but I don't think I can bring myself to having a peanut butter sandwich with it.

Any tomato based recipe should have some sugar added to it. Not so much that it will be that noticable, but will balance the overbearing acidic taste. I make lots of spaghetti sauce and would never forget to add some sugar to it. People who are telling you that it's gross, don't know anything about cooking and are assumiming, your adding too much sugar. What you're doing is correct.

I don't know if my mom put brown sugar in her chili but we always had peanut butter on crackers when we had chili for dinner! I still eat them now when I make chili myself!

I moved from Tn to Ky last year and have found a lot of strange things here, lol. When I serve chili I make grilled cheese or Peanutbutter sandwiches. I put two hershy's kisses in my chili while cooking it my family loves it and it doesn't make it sweet.

Yes, and I do it every time. I think it helps with the bitter taste of the spices. I also put brown sugar in my BBQ sauce when grilling out. When I make deer jerky I put brown sugar in that too. I don't see anything wrong with the way anyone cooks as long as it tastes good, who cares?

Yes...I add some brown sugar, but not only to Chili, but to several BBQ/Southwetsern recipes... As for example in sauces, salad dressings, desserts like cheesecakes and drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic).

Makes sense... People have been adding brown sugar to baked beans for ages...
I like to add a little syrup to them myself...
