Cedar is your answer! As a pet specialist manager with Petsmart for five years, you can trust cedar. Fleas (and other bugs) HATE the smell of cedar and the oils can actually kill them.
Buy cedar blocks for under the bed, cedar shavings for pet beds. It works and your house smells good too!
Note: Keep cedar away from newborns and infants, it can irritate their skin.

I read that lavendar oil bothers fleas. If you get it, I read to put a few small drops on the back of their neck (just like the Advantix you get from the vet).
Also, put it anywhere the dog hangs out alot. IE their beds, a certain spot on the floor, or sofa.
Cedar also works (like the other person mentioned).
Flea bombs don't work in my opinion. When I was younger, we had fleas at my parents house. It was pretty bad. You have to vacate your house for upwards of 4-6 hours, every living creature has to be removed (I had a hamster when I was 10), and it's just a bother. Plus they're toxic.
If nothing else, your vet might give you a sample or you can buy a tube of the Advantix (one month only cost me $15). It kills fleas within 20 minutes. Afterwards, I vaccummed and shampooed the carpets. The fleas really weren't in my house long enough to lay eggs or burrow in the carpet, but it made me feel better. Our cat ran away and came home with fleas. As soon as we noticed it, we got the drop from the vet.
Good luck!

The best way is to have the exterminator come in if the house is infested. If it is just a small area that's infested then using
Citrus peel extract is an excellent choice against fleas for dogs, because its components—d-limonene and linalool—kill all stages of the flea's life cycle. I have completely eradicated our home and dogs of fleas using citrus peel extract—I don’t think anything else works as well. Still, you must use caution: while it is a natural material, and much safer for health and the environment than toxic synthetic pesticides, it is not without problems, especially for asthmatics (see “Caution,” section at the provided website.. Citrus shouldn't be used around cats.
Good Luck

Use a flea comb on your pet. Should be able to purchase at local pet store. Just use it over and over again and the fleas eventually all get caught and die. You can drown the fleas to kill them once you catch them.

You have to bomb, treat the carpet, and do it over an over again. If you have an animal, you have to keep treating them at the same time.
If it gets cold where you live the fleas become dormant. It doesn't mean they are dead and they will come back in warm weather. So, continue to treat the area during that time.

Heavily salt the carpets, leave it as long as you can, and vacuum thoroughly - very thoroughly. Don't let the pets or kids on the carpet while the salt is down because that much salt can burn skin or paw pads.
