okay, Lets assume that the real number is 50% of 40,000.
And of those 20,000 lets assume that 25% of those checked out directly from the iraq conflict.
5000 troops that said, "I have had enough of this illegal war!"
Good for them!

I don't care what site you list or if it states that it came from the Pentagon. The figure is wrong. I can list 10 times as many sites that list the number much much lower. Your biased sources also don't separate those AWOL's into categories. Those that just didn't show up for duty, those that had to take care of personal business, those that failed to report for their weekend and so on. Almost all of those return to duty after their matters are taken care of. They have not "left" because of the war. I'm married to the Army and there's constantly military issues in the news. All kinds of stuff. There has been no reported cases around here at all. If you actually talked to people in the military, you'd find that most of us completely understand what the war is about and agree with being there.
You really should become informed and get real facts instead of propaganda.

That's a ridiculous statistic. For one, it doesn't count the little punks who crap their pants in Basic Training and try to run off, or people who come in a day or two late from leave, or any other number of factors; what's more, if they're classified as AWOL, but only as AWOL, that means that at some point they've come back FROM being AWOL. If they haven't come back, they're no longer AWOL, they're a deserter. There's a time limit of 30 days, at which point you go from being AWOL to having deserted. The regulations that define this are quite clear. Quite a few of those high-quality individuals who deliberately DO go AWOL often come back within a day or two (in some cases, hours) of hitting that "deserter" limit, to avoid the stiffer penalties it carries. What's more, you're implying that most US troops do not support the Iraq war, which is retarded. The Iraq war, militarily speaking, has been a bigger success than any other prolonged war in this nation's history; we haven't even lost 3000 people yet, and we've been there for more than three years now. Compare that to losses from any other major war we've been in and see the difference. So, no, our own military personnel are NOT taking a "preemptive stance" against this war. If anything the main reason any of us may have had issues with it is because American civilian idiots back home can't get it into their heads to keep both their noses, and their politics, out of this and out of our business. They know of this war only what they see on TV, and deem themselves experts. They get one or two dissident Iraq veterans, ignore the thousands of other soldiers who consider those one or two dissidents to be traitors and morons, and claim they've got irrefutable proof of "military support" for the anti-war cause. Give me a break. Try serving in the military for a few years and going on a few rotations in and out of theater and see how far this kind of malarky goes with real soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines. Not too far at all, really.

Read your own references. Your left wing yellow journaliists have once again slanted the truth. AWOL can be as simple as a National Guard or Reserve Soldier not showing up for weekend duty. Note the quote says "many who went AWOL for family reasons." I am a veteran, my wife is a veteran and my father in law is a veteran. Those who go AWOL leave the volunteer military in a better standard as they would be the first to bail in a bad situation. Bear in mind we have a "volunteer" miltary unlike Viet Nam. If you choose to enlist you choose to deploy. Simple as that. To assume the military is taking a stand against the war as you and your anti-anything establishment group of social drops outs do is to once again validate to the rest of the world your shrill, shallow and uneducated stances about items of great importance that affect the majority of the world population.
It is impossible to put a precise figure on the number of American troops who have left the army as a result of the US involvement in Iraq. The Pentagon says that a total of 40,000 troops have deserted their posts (not simply those serving in Iraq) since the year 2000. This includes many who went AWOL for family reasons. The Pentagon's spokesmen say that the overall number of deserters has actually gone down since operations began in Afghanistan and Iraq, but there is no doubt that a steady trickle of deserters who object to the Iraq war have made it over the border and are now living in Canada

Even if true, the 40,000 figure represents all persons who for any reason have missed a formation. This does not mean all of them are living underground or in hiding. Probably 99.9% of them (again, if this is accurate) have already returned to their units. You should not read too much into something that already admits it has an agenda.

Liberal BS once again.... skewing statistics by lumping all things under one heading.... and in this case, ASSuming that all AWOL is deserting the military....
There have been many AWOLs in peacetime too... the vast majority of which are linked to mistakes in getting passes approved, not showing back in time after travel, misread schedules, etc....
stop smoking crack libs

Old Peter Laufer is not a very good reference to support your BS. He is a commislamic fascist, same as you. Just because you has an article in a British newspaper does not improve his credentials. You are lying. Comprendo?

That statistic is totally bogus. You can find information to support just about ANYTHING on the internet, but there is no way that one is true. If it were, there would be 40,000 MISSING PEOPLE, and don't you think their families would be making some noise about that?
