The dog is not actually my dog. I have rental cabins and the dog showed up at one of my cabins and the renter there started feeding the dog and it stayed. He has had her for about a year now. He asked me to try to do some research for him as to what could be wrong. Believe me, if it were my dog, I would have been to the vet long ago! I have asked why he hasn't taken her and he tells me that she is terrified of riding in a car and he is about an hour away from the closest vet. Thank you all for your replies!

The skin problem sounds like it could be mange. Definitely schedule an appointment to see your vet. They will probably want to do a skin scraping to look for mites under the microscope. If they don't find anything there, then they may want to do some bloodwork.
Your vet will probably prescribe an antibiotic to help against infection and a steroid to reduce inflammation. There may be other meds, as well, but I'm not sure what.

If the dog has ever been to a vet, the owner could ask that vet to prescribe a mild sedative that he would give a few hours before the car ride. The vet would need a current weight for the dose.

What breed is your dog, how old, male or female? Some breeds are pre-dispositioned to food allergies, so you need to evaluate your dog's diet, AFTER YOU CALL THE VET FOR YOUR APPOINTMENT FOR BLOODWORK, TO FIND OUT WHY IT IS SHAKING AND LETHARGIC!!! Could it have gotten under a leaky car, and gotten some oil on it's coat, which is irritating to the skin, if it's enough. Which possibly could have been leaking some antifreeze, which is a BAD thing, dogs like the taste, but it is very toxic, and will shut down the organs and kill your dog, so GO TO THE VET! When you get back, if your dog is okay, email me and we can discuss feeding options! Good luck!

Itchy skin in dogs can be caused by a log of different things. Their skin is more sensitive than ours and they are exposed to a lot of irritants like pollens, grasses, fleas, etc. They can also develop fungal infections on their skin which are very itchy. Brushing your dog daily will help remove irritants and weekly baths will also help. Since fleas can cause bad cases of dermatitis using a product like Front Line can also be very helpful. Check with your vet for more information.

Instead of asking here, you should be on your way to the vet with your dog! Why are you waiting?

Take that dog to the vet NOW.
He needs to be checked out. He could have many things wrong with him/her. It could be dangerous to you.

Give your dog a bath & take him to the vet for a check-up.

He sounds like he's sick. It might be a nutritional deficiency, or it might be something else altogether. I hope it's a deficiency: That is more easily remedied.

Take him to the vet and find out.

Good luck!
