Here are a few options you'd like to consider :

1. http://www.iobit.com/WindowsCare.htm Advance Windows care : This software is particularly useful if you're using Windows XP. It analyses your systems and fixes any deviations in 2 clicks. For high end users, it allows you to customize individual preferences relating to visual appearance, startup etc.

2. There's a software called Game XP ( http://www.theorica.net/gamexp.htm ) . It optimizes your system to the maximum possible extent to ensure a good gaming experience. It switches off all of Windows XP's jazzy visual effects and makes your RAM less loaded.

3. CCLeaner ( http://www.ccleaner.com ) is used to analyse and clean the smallest of unnecessary files on your system. Clears History, Cache etc not only for IE but for all the programs installed on your system. You can choose the programs for which you wanna clear the data. It also detects and fixes any registry or system issues.

5. Finally, do a bit of manual tweaking by running services.msc and switching off any unnecessary services (Start -> Run -> Type "services.msc" Press enter). Also disable any useless startup services (such as adobe manager if u dont use it too often or some camera softwares etc..) by going to Start->Run -> Type msconfig.sys and press Enter. Uncheck the startup items that you don't want.

Hope this sets your system in the right gear ;)

Cheers
