I have 3 girls ages 3,5 and 6. I only know how to put their hair in a ponytail. Their school pictures are coming up and I would like to be able to fix their hair up to look prettier and better than the simple plain pony tail.

put it in a pony tail and the curl it with a cruling iron...little girls are going to mess up anything more complicated...and a messy updo is going to look worse in a picture than just leaving their hair down....unless they get their pics taken the second they get to school

There is nothing wrong with pony tails, dress them up. Try adding rollers on the ends of them. You can also try adding twists in the front or the back. Have you tried straw curls. I have a 5 year old daughter for picture day she wore about 6 twist in the front, I geled the back in a pony tail to the side and added some rollers, tied a ribbon around and she was beautiful. You can also do zig zag parts to make pony tails more pretty. You could also braid the hair up into a ponytail leave the ends lose and again curl the ends.
