the best birthday gift or any gift at all is one that has to do with what the person is into. you could buy a very nice photo album and put pictures in it that mean alot to her. that was a good idea. as an extra you could have people give you momentos- letters from friends expressing how much she means- and get her husband to put some birthday cards from the past in there. or like i said if you know what shes really into buy her something that has to do with that. or you could throw her a nice party and do the album too

Splice together a home video that celebrates the highlights of the last 50 years. Her baby pic, her school pic's her graduation pic, her wedding photo's, the birth of her son, etc. etc. etc. Kinda like a family tree on video. You can add music to them etc. If you need help it check with any photo store (or consult the nearest 15 yr old)
They are precious gifts to give, and very inexpensive. It can be a little time consuming, but get your family involved. Trust me they will be so proud of the finished product.
Then your mother-in-law can pop the video in and watch it any time, she can also easily take it to others as a brag video.
Good Luck!

How about organizing a sitting with a photographer? That way she can have an updated family portrait. And without telling her, pick out a frame with her tastes and decor in mind. Maybe even have a plaque engraved with all the names. But at the party, hide it. Just give her maybe a little copy of it, and then for the big gift, bring out the big pic in the frame! That'll make her day!

What about photoshopping some photos(dull them, B &W, emphasizing certain features) of the family. Compile them into a long video complete with music, other effects and all. Play it for her on her b'dae maybe? This can be easily down with Windows Movie Maker.
Or maybe a nice poster filled with drawings of a cute family tree?

Do a scrap book photo albulm of the cycle and phases of life from when your husband was a baby-growing up-getting married-and having his own kids. Put pictures of each of their births to now include a lot of pictures of their grandma with them and the family. At the end of the book take a family photo of you and your husband and kids.
If you've ever done scrap booking it is really neet way to preserve memorable pictures.

Have a portrait made. If she has a great sense of humor, get her 50 of something or 50 of lots of things. For example, 50 M&Ms, 50 pennies or nickels, etc. When my brother-in-law had his 50th, he got quite a kick out of that. It shows them that 50 is either a lot or a little.

Try to find something that appeals to her style or personality. If I were buying for my grandmother I'd buy her a cute stylish watch or purse. She loves cute stylish stuff. My mother, I'd buy her a new cook book or an apron with something funny on it, she loves to cook. If she likes chocolates get her some gourmet chocolates, If she likes wine a nice bottle of wine will do.

They have necklaces now that you can get pictures ingraved on. I don't know where you live but here in Florida you can get them at a Flee Market and they are not that expensive, under $50.00. You just take the picture you want in and they lazer ingrave it onto a necklace. I don't know if this is something you would be interested in but it would be something she would always have to remind her of her special day.
